Few weeks ago I mentioned about going with my WW-2 Dad on the Honor Flight. BUT, I didn't have my "guardian" training yet so we bumped back to September flight

Take training July 24 but in the mean time got an email from the chairman of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight (Illinois) that they are in a Pepsi competition to send more vets to Washington, DC.

Oooohhh, Maybe James Howell can help me with this!

Make sure you get on it. Its a trip of a lifetime. I sure enjoyed the trip in April with my 90 year old Dad. We were gone for 2 days and both days were fully scheduled.

Thanks Pete,
Yeah, Dad's REALLY Looking forward to it. Asked him about me being a "guardian" after that: Well, I think I can wait that long!

Last September, my wife and I were waiting to board a plane at Reagan when they announced on the squawk box that a WWII Honor Flight was arriving. It was awesome!

When the vets came off the plane, the entire terminal erupted in cheers. I don't think there were too many dry eyes in the place.

Richard,

A starting point is to go to honorflight.org. It will show you scheduled locations, dates, etc.

Nashville will be having one in September. A major news/talk station here had a big publicity/fund raiser yesterday to emphasize the program.

There's no cost to the veteran. Sounds pretty cool.

My understanding is that every county has a veteran's service office. That would be a place to start when looking for information on a flight.

I have been on two flights. The first was early last year. I was asked by the local nursing home to be a guardian for a local WWII vet that was in their assisted living section. It was a very emotional trip.
I am a Vietnam vet. Going to the Vietnam Memorial was the most emotionally trying thing I have ever done. I had up until then not talked very much about my time over there. That visit shook some memories loose.
I went again with a 98 year old neighbor, this May. It was a blast. That old man walked our butts into the ground. LOL He still milks thirty cows in a tie stall barn every morning and night. His boys have a modern free-stall barn just across the road but their Dad still want to touch his cows every milking. LOL He wanted to see all of the sites in DC and we sure tried. He has only been out of the state of Iowa three times since coming back from WWII. Wanted to make the most out of the trip. He will still be going strong when they plant me. LOL
