Got woke up the other night to a bat flying around the bedroom. I see where they are coming out of the roof where one pitch meets the other roof. So I think if I wait till they are all out then plug the gap so they can't get back in should take care of the problem. Couple of questions: What is the best way to plug the gap, silicone? or do I need to use steel wool. Are the bats going to go somewhere else or are they just going to find another crack in my roof and crawl in? 40 years ago I would have just hung a bucket of water by the hole and took care of the problem for good, but think I'm getting soft in my old age. well you may be getting soft but its also illegal to kill bats in wisconsin, plug the hole with silicone the will probably move to a shed or something, they are good to have around, eatin skeeters good luck.

You might want to check with your health dept. A bat in the bedroom may be considered exposure to rabies.
As far as being illegal to kill a bat...any wildlife in your house is fair game.

My uncle in North Dakota is know as "Batman " he goes around getting rid of and bat proofing houses . I can forward your e-amil to him .

If you want them out of the house first, take a small chunk of 1 1/2" pvc pipe and make a passage for them. On the third night, place a chunk of pantyhos over the end. It must have a hole to let them out, but they can not get back in.

Silicone is exspensive, but is probably the best. If there is another hole, you will still have company. There is no system that keeps them away, other than pluging holes.

Many profesional companies offer a system---a big ordeal to have them just admit they are plugging holes.

Hang a bathouse near the entrance they are using, then plug the hole when they are all out.

Windows either open to the side or tilt in at the top here and rolling shutters are common. Old couple in the next town spends from October to about May in Spain and leaves their house here in hybernation. They left a couple windows tilted and the shutters an inch or so open for ventilation. They came home last year to hundreds of bats in a room.

You can build a "bat house" pretty easy- Just google bat house for plans. put it on the south side of where you want them and they will find it. But you will have to plug the hole after they get out. I used expandable foam and that seemed to work well.

Bats are a real pain in the you know where. A bunch invaded my barn a couple years ago. They hang and crap all over anything that is below them. Then when they leave they fly in circles and pee as they are flying, every pace it lands is a rust spot. They go back to Mexico in the winter. It is against the law to kill bats and rattle snakes here in Calif. I guess I shoulden't have let my tractor run in the closed barn for so long. As for Mr Snake, Just don't cross my path. Stan

This would be a good time to build or buy a Bat House. Their one of the best hunters for bugs. Just look them up and read about them theres even plans on building houses for them.

If you plug the hole when there are young in the
attic...you may end up with dead young,,,and
a smell. Got to wait until the young are flying,
but before winter hibernation begins !

I have had bats twice now. They can get into openings as small as 3/8 of an inch. It is hard to get rid of them. It is illegal to kill them. What I did was open the side of eve on the house in the area they came in and let them all fly out around dusk. You can watch them fly out. Then i put the siding back on and siliconed everything really well. I cleaned their mess up with bleach. But be very careful, and you might want to get a professional to do it because bat waste can cause histoplasmosis and that is deadly. wear a OSHA approved respirator and through away your clothes you are wearing. it is dangerous stuff. the problem with bats is they can get in such a small hole or crevis. you have to literally go around your house and silicone every spot that you think they can get in. you have to basically think like a bat. if you can keep them out two years they more then likely won"t come back is what i read on the internet. becareful

My aunt's house was invaded by bats when her next door neighbor's house burned down. She called a specialist. His handle was "Batman". He only handled bat problems. He examined her house and installed one-way bat exits anywhere a bat could go thru. That way they could get out but not back in. Worked. Cost her 400 bucks and neither her or neighbors insurance company would pay.

I have them get into the attic of our old farm house every few years. This product works on getting rid of them. You will need to wait until later in the year to get them completely out. The young need to be big enough to fly.

DR T'S BAT-A-WAY You put it in a knit bag and hang it where they are at. It has a very chemical smell, like very strong moth balls. It works.

How do you attract them to a bat house??? I have some in an old barn that we are going to take down. I like them around killing bugs. I see plans for bat houses but wonder how you get them to go in???
