I thought this was a pretty profound quote:

On Dirty Jobs, I’m no expert, and I’m even less of one here. But I have a theory, and it goes like this – all jobs rely on one of two industries – mining and agriculture. Every tangible thing our society needs is either pulled from the ground, or grown from the ground. Without these fundamental industries there would be no jobs of any kind. There would be no economy. Civilization begins with miners and farmers, and polite society is only possible when skilled workers transform those raw materials into something useful or edible.

I do believe he's got a good point.

Hmmmm. I think that is correct.

As to logging and fishing - in both cases a useful product or food that grows on its own or is raised is being harvested.

He's hit the nail on the head- The reason we're in trouble is that we don't actually PRODUCE much of anything anymore, beyond ag products- regulations have nearly strangled mining, and now will strangle oil production as well.

The big thinkers, of course, want us to be a "service" economy. Mark Twain said it best on that subject, many years ago: "You can't base an economy on everybody doing each others laundry."

Most forests being logged today have been planted in place of previous clear cut areas. They hardly "grew on their own".

A lot of the fresh water fish consumed in the US were also raised on farms.

Well, that leaves me speachless & dumbfounded. Speachless, because someone with a voice is finally realizing/saying something about the plight of the American farmer AND seems to have a grasp of things. Dumbfounded that there is that many people still in the FFA. GO Farmkids!!

Let's see...Someone with a pleasant personality, a realistic outlook on life, an appreciation for the common man, a sense of humor, and he doesn't need a teleprompter.

MIKE ROWE FOR PRESIDENT!

I"ve always liked Mike Rowe, he seems like a straight shooter, and I"ve always thought that farmers should get whatever they need, whenever they need it, no questions asked because without them we are in a heap of trouble. I think i like Mike even more after reading the article. Gary

It is difficult dealing with the root cause of most laws, G R E E D and lack of scrupples.
For instance, if every logging company that logged large tracks would voluntaritly take a portion of the profits and replant properly, the industry would take off. It also would not be constantly strangled with laws trying to curb the effects of the greedy ones that want to cut, leave a large mess, and not care about a replant for fear that it cuts in to their little pile of money.
This same theme can be applied across the board to almost every industry and business.

you know what the timber industry says:
" Earth first....we'll log the other planets later."
I love my saws!

I'd think the narrator/host of 'Deadliest Catch' would be including fishing in his comments - as well as logging. :)

Been a while since I've heard that sentiment out in public.

I was taught in high school economics,
the economy is like a three legged milk stool, mining,(minerals) agriculture,(food and building materials)and fishing (food) are the base and all other aspects ride on them. If the base is unstable then all the upper levels become unstable too. Collapse one leg and the whole thing will fall

Probably a lot of truth to that.
Maybe our economy is in the dumps because a lot of mining, agriculture and farming that our country uses is being imported from other countries.

Sounds like you had a good HS economics teacher.

I wonder what HS economics class is like now? Chances are I don't want to know.

I'm sure he has a lot more common sense than the painsy arrss that are running our country now, both sides of the isle. They are all a bunch of spineless hipicrits who worry more about campaign funding than balancing state and national budgets.

Are you implying that replanting, cleaning up, removing any signs of roads and putting the property back like it was is voluntary?
Most of them only do these things because of laws that govern them, not because they are being a good business person.
I know you could tell us about a few smaller family companies that have always done it right, but I am talking about the industry in general.

If pine and done right you would leave 4 to 6 seed trees per acre, nature will take care of replanting, but most will clear cut and have the land replanted with fast growing...

I would say years ago that would be true...agriculture did'nt always depend exclusively on mining.

The highest level factor for buisness is also considered to be non-renewable.

So we'd better understand that
