transmission oil

I went to our local parts dealer to find out what oil my tractor needed, and learned it was 80-90 weight. I was ok with that until i saw the price tag, 20 dollars a gallon! I have plenty of 85-140 weight oil lying around, would that work just as well? or at least good enough to save me 200 in oil? thanks for the help.

The 80/90wt is recommended for most of our JD tractors in the original JD owner's manual.

We use 140wt in all our JD tractors with no problems.

Bought two 5 gallon buckets last week for about $22 each; highest I've paid was about $38 each.

You need to find out what oil spec gear oil you need for your tractor, GL 1-2-3-4-5. If you put GL 1-2-3-4 oil in a machine that needs GL5, you will kill the ring / pinion.
If you put GL 5 oil in a machine that specifys GL 1-2-3-4, you stand a chance that the additives in GL 5 oil will destroy any white or yellow metal driveline parts.

Kinda depends on what you're going to use it for. Transmission, differential or final drive? Are you in Manitoba or the Yucatan Peninsula?

Ford originally recommended 90 weight oil for the transmission and differential in the hundred series tractors. Nowadays, the recommendation is to hydraulic fluid instead, as it shifts smoother and won't cause problems if it leaks into the hydraulic reservoir.

Unless you live in a fairly hot climate, I would not recommend using a heavier oil than recommended in the transmission, as you're likely to have rougher shifting.

where did you find them at that price?

80W-90 and 85W-140 are pretty much the same when its cold out.

What tractor?
I doubt I'd use 140 in anything unless it was specifically called for. That stuff is so heavy it will starve a lot of needle bearings unless it was designed for it.
If I had a choice between lighter oil and heavier oil it will always be lighter around here.

The price you were quoted for 80W90 is also absurd. You can get it at walmart any time you like for less than 50/bucket. That would be less than 10 bucks a gallon...
