Wont run without choke on

I have a 3414 industrial backhoe. It wont run unless the choke is on. I have cleaned the plugs, checked the fuel line, put fresh gas in it. Checked the air intake to the carb and that was all open and clear. I am wondering what I should check next. With the choke on it runs like a top. Thanks for any help.

If that carburetor has a main jet adjustment sc/rew near the bottom of the carburetor you need to open that. If it doesn't have that on the carb. your carburetor probably needs a good cleaning and the jets blown out. Remove the gas line and see if there's a full flow of gas from the tank. If that looks ok remove the tube fitting where your gas line was connected and look for a screen as it may be dirty and blocking the fuel flow to the carb. Hal
PS: Hold your hand over the throat of the carb while a helper cranks over the engine to see if there's good suction on your hand. If there's very little suction you probably have low manifold vacuum do to worn cylinders or a manifold leak.

Spray some starting fluid, carb cleaner, or use unlit propane torch around the intake manifold and the engine should speed up in the area of a leak. Could be a fuel flow problem from rust in the tank as well. Remove the air cleaner to make sure it isn't plugged.

you have a blocked passage somewhere in your carb. last one I worked on did the same thing... I bought a kit, disassembled and dipped the carb, then spent several hours with compressed air and fine wire locating all the passages and cleaning them out. when finished, tractor ran like a top! (be careful not to break off a wire inside the carb!) ...D

Before you go into the carb, first remove sediment bulb and make sure you have a steady flow of gas, not just dripping. Also, carb should have a screen where gas line goes into it- remove and clean screen. Then do the ether/ WD40 test mentioned below, to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak.

Carbs and I don't get along all that well- so I always eliminate every other possibility before messing with them. I sure like diesels!
