Tractors have changed

Did a full service on a Kubota M9540 last week. I was amazed how much tractors have changed. This thing has a enclosed cab, power steering, power brakes,AC and heater. AM/FM radio with Disc player. Floating seat and cup holders.Automatic transmission. Front and rear lights.

When I learned on my first tractor back in 1963. It had a manual transmission, steel seat, umbrella for a cab. If you wanted AC just just drove faster or waited for a cooler day.

The M9540 has a manual transmission. Either 8 or 12 speeds. Hydraulic shuttle models have a power reverse feature but no such thing as an automatic transmission on an M9540. The M100X series has Intellishift which shifts automatically between gears in each range if you've told it to do that. No IVT offered by Kubota...yet.

Talk about change; someone told me that they're now making aeroplanes without props; true? What pulls........or pushes......it?

Could be. Look at it this way: "The more things change, the more they stay the same." In the case of aeroplanes, sure, they have no props. BUT, they do have engines and engines work much in the same old way. "Suck, squeeze, bang and blow."

You are correct Bill. This one has the Hydraulic shuttle on it. But compared to what I learned on. It might as well be an automatic. What I had was push on the clutch and yank hard on the gear shift.

Been off the farm for forty years. So I am relearning tractors. Generators and engines I know. But tractors are new to me. I am not sure I would want me working on tractors either. So I just stick to the simple things.

Forty years from now the crusty old coots will be recommending those nice simple 2010 tractors to newbie land owners.
Not them new expensive complicated 2050 models.
