What's an '85 jd 850 worth?

A friend of mine is looking at a jd 850 with 2400 hrs on it. The man uses it to bush hog a small area and has put only 300 hrs on it in the last 10 years...any ideas? or any website to look on?
Thanks.

Actually.. It's a bit more than that.. Yanmar had to build them to JD specs (which meant some parts had to be made heavier) according to Green Magazine a while back.

Seems like some of the parts would be ones off of the next bigger model of Yanmar, but can't remember what was "beefed up".. Seems like it was the front axle and a few other things.. I'll try to see if I can't find the issue, if someone more knowing don't beat me to it.

Seems like my local JD house has one advertised on the chalkboard behind their counter, but unsure the shape, and I believe it has $5200 on it.. (there's a few things on the board, could be thinking the wrong item)

BTW.. they don't sell tractors/equip other than for customers (consignment kinda thing), they are just a parts/repair facility, so I don't think they'd jack the price up like a normal dealer.. They just help the locals out by writing it on a board where other customers can see whats for sale in the neighborhood.

A JD 850 is a little different than a Yanmar decal tractor. The JD where built to JD Specs. That made them a little different. An example of this was live pto, it was an option on the JD 850 but not on the Yanmar of the same size.
These little compact tractors would take a real pounding and keep going. I think that they where tougher than the new Augusta built JD compacts.
As for value if it is real clean it would bring $6500-7500 2wd , 4wd would be $7500-9000. Check to see if it has power steering or not, deduct $750 if not. Also if it does not have power steering it will not have live pto. You could have power steering and non live pto but not live pto with out power steering. I think this was just an option code thing not a mechanical reason.

Like anything else there are a lot of factors to consider. Try the machine finder website, it's John Deere's dealer listing site. It found 14 850's ranging from $2500 to about $13,000. Take a look and seen what you find.

Early 850's were 2wd only. Later ones were 4wd and may have had a 2 stage clutch. Power steering and remote hydraulics were options and are no longer available from Deere. Good luck.

I've got a nice 950,4 wd with a canopy and Bush Hog loader/3 pt with a Mott mower % ft, 5" bush Hog type mower and a 5" drag box I'd sell for $10.000.00 OBO
about 3000 hrs on it and the Yanmar Diesel runs perfect. Hyd on the loader are a tad slow.
No P.S. Handy little guy that is low maint. and runs well. Just don't use it enough.
