oats hay update

Just baled the oats today for hay. Cut it on Wednesday with our smaller 9' New Idea 290 moco with the wings spread wide open, let it sit thursday and raked it yesterday (Friday) evening with the neighbors wheel rake as ours wouldn't pick it up very well.

Baled it today. Got 605 bales (4 loads) from roughly 8 acres. Tied the cows in on some tonight just to see how they like it and they sure weren't complaining. Won't be much milk in it, but it'll mainly be fed to the heifers and steers, and it's better than nothing. The grain was dried out in it very well. Tried to squeeze it but it was dried out and hard. Had milk when I cut it so I think that's plenty dry. We'll unload it tomorrow morning and finish baling the rest of our hay.

Gona rollup about 15 a. of oats today raked it friday and wish I had a wheel rake . Oats dont rake real well .

Oats keep just fine in the barn. Only problem is rats that get after the seed. Feed oat hay first, get it away from the rats.

We've got an older 5 wheel farmhand style rake, made by Morill out of California. IOt's pretty worn but still works in a good heavy crop and decent in a thinner crop. The oats was just laid right down on the ground though and the wheels just went right over it, not even picking up 1/2.

Borrowed the neighbors newer Gehl 206 6 wheel rake made by Vicon, and holy crap does that thing work nice. It's got the newer style wheels that actually ride on bearings so they stay tight, and the newer style teeth that actually pick up the crop better because they have more flex to them or something. Lots of adjustment on that thing too. even with a 6 wheel rake I was able to rake 2 passes towards each other and they didn't end up on top of each other. That was never possible with our rakes with our 9' machine.

I think we need a new rake.

No one knows - the mice & rats eat it up before then.

Most tyry to cut it before it heads; has better protien value & easier to eats for the cows - they don't like straw all that well, but like the oat hay if it's a bit tender yet.

Again I caution you, don't stack it in a barn especially under hay. It WILL burn your barn down. Over the years there have been numerous barns and hay sheds burnt down in my area from oat hay.

Any hay put up at too high moisture content will cause spontaneous combustion and burn a barn down!!!!!!!!!!

In my youth my father stored 100's of sq bales of oats in a barn and never burned a barn down. He also never salted a bale.
