I have a NH664 baler, 1996 i think, I bought it used about 5 years ago and store it under a roof. I have baled about 1200 bales with it.
A few years ago I started having a slight problem starting a bale. The hay would ride up the belt and shoot out the top of the front of the baler (over the twine boxes). Sometimes it would get sucked back down, other times so much would build up it would create the mother of all jams between belts and rollers. Dealer said not to bale very dry hay during hottest part of the day.
Once the bale is up to pressure the baler works great and delivers as nice of a bale as I see anywhere, pressure gauge shows 1200pounds as I bale.
So over the last few year the problem has grown to now the baler is useless. The only possible way to start any bale is by driving sideways across windrows until the bale is up to pressure then go down windrows, takes about 15 - 20 minutes PER bale and that makes a mess of the windrows.
I have tried starting bales at every PTO and ground speed, doesn't help. The belts have been shortened 2" and the top roller has been moved to the top hole. The starter drum slip clutch is good and the rollers are not slipping and neither are the belts.
A 20+ year (experience not years old) NH implement mech came out yesterday and even rode on the baler for a few feet and watched and cannot figure it out.
Where to go now? This is a machine that appears to be in great mechanical shape. Drive chains are tight, belts are in good shape, clutches are operating correctly but the machine as a whole just doesn't work properly.
