Hydraulic filter element on a 1958 International 340 Utility

I own a 1958 International 340 utility tractor, it"s a gasoline tractor and the hydraulic system is 201 engine-driven.

We were changing out the hydraulic filter element (the old one is pretty much ruined). I ordered a new one from International, received it, and it doesn"t match the old one. The dimensions are identical, but whereas the old case screwed down on two smaller interior filters, the new one is all one piece and has a large hole in the underside that the old one does not.

I will try to post pics, but my mechanic and I do not see how the new one will work and I can"t find any filter elements that match the old one. Any suggestions? I really like this old tractor and don"t want to get rid of it because the hydraulic system filter is shot.

If I can"t post a photo, then I"ll send them to anyone who might have an idea what to do.

Are the top holes the same size where it mounts to suction tube? From the looks of things, either International got you the wrong filter or it may be the superceded part for later tractors. The "bracket" that is screwed onto bottom of old filter looks to support filter by pressing against sump pan. The new filter has a lip that appears to have same height protrusion. Possibly holds filter up like bracket did. Only other suggestion would be to find a large enough welch plug to fit hole in bottom of new filter and rig some type of support.

Remove the screws and pop the old filter/screen apart, clean it, and install new filters. (WIX # 51139.)

Don't know if it is the same, but my '59 T340 hydraulic filter was available from NAPA. It looks similar, but slipped right in.

The two filter styles are interchangeable but to use the later style you also need to get a bypass valve with screen that fits in the large hole. The small filters for the early style should be readily available since they are also used in a lot of truck power steering systems.
