O/T Best Way to Clean Outboard Gas Tank

I just got my outboard back from the shop, all tuned and ready for fishing. When I checked my gas can tank, I found it full of old gas and crud. For clarification, the tank has a hose going to the motor--it's not part of the motor. How's the best way to clean the tank out? Or should I just buy a new one? Gas is about six years old or so.

Only satisfactory way I ever got them clean was to have them boiled out at a radiator shop. Ends up they leak at least half the time after that. Now, if they got rust and crud in them I replace with plastic. I like metal tanks but for some jobs plastic has its advantages.

Just buy a new one or you will regret it! And contrary to what others say , stay away from ethanol fuel unless you are going to use a lot of fuel and never let it sit!!!!!

plastic one float better and dont rust, but they dont last very long ether due to sun and ultravoilet deterioration. But for the price, you can pitch em every 5 years or so.

I don't know about the best way, but I mostly emptied mine and put several large nuts in it (count them so you make sure to get them all back out), shook it for a while and then emptied the rest of the fuel out. I have also heard of guys emptying them and using a pressure washer to wash them out. I suppose if you have time to let it dry out completely before filling it again, that might blast most of the crud out. A new tank wasn't an option for me because I still use the old pressurized two line tank, but it certainly would be a sure way of having a nice clean tank.

I found another tank I bought at an auction that looked very clean inside--bright metal. Pulled the fuel pick-up and that was clean. Switched a fitting for the fuel hose, filled it with fresh gas, and fired up my motor in a trash can filled with water. Ran great. I need to pick up a paddle anyway, just to be safe.
