Cleaning a generator

I took the non-working generator off of my MF180 and took it apart. It doesn't appear to have "throwed Solder" but it is thoroughly caked with grease. What should I wash it with? Is it safe to use Gasoline or diesel fuel? Thanks in advance, doorman

Compressed air will remove a lot of the crud.

If you need to clean deeper:

Take it apart to get it clean..at least remove the shaft, out the front, to inspect and clean the Commutator..and check the brushes..
best to lift the brushes out of the holders before you pull the shaft out..
Once clean, look at the commutator and see that the sections are NOT flush with the insulation..
If not, you can use a broken Hacksaw blade to lower the insulation between the commutator segments..
Re-grease and oil the bearings and check to see that the brushes are not worn out..
Brush springs should have good tension...
