OT Chevy head bolts

I have to change a head gasket on my '92 Chevy Corsica. It has the 2.2L 4 cyl engine. all the parts stores I have looked at on line recomend changing the head bolts but none says why they should be changed.
Why can't the old bolts be reused if they look good when removed? Thanks, Ted.

It could be they are a torque to yield bolt and once they yield then they are not reuseable. Meaning they are stretched.

Stuart is right on. Don't reuse the head bolts, they'll break if you do. Be sure to check your head for flatness with a machinist's straight edge, or just have it surfaced.

Don't know if this particular engine is involved, but GM had problems with head bolts breaking on some of their 4 cylinder engines.

The price of a set of head bolts is cheap insurance against a whole bunch of future grief.

Back in the day, when there were lots more 2.2"s on the road,I use to do at least two head gasket jobs on those a week.

As Stuart said, the bolts are torque to yield which means they are designed to stretch. If re-used,you simply will not get the head tight enough and gasket will fail because bolts have already been stretched and weakened. Most bolt sets run only about 25-30 bucks.

Check the head for straighness. No more than .004" over entire length of head.Follow torque specs, sequence and additional 90 degree turn per instructions.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Sounds like I'll be changing the bolts. It's not worth taking a chance on breaking one off.
Ted.
