When using a 4" grinder with a cupped stiff wire brush to remove paint from the MF 175, hold on tight with both hands. I just came in for a minute to perform some 1st aid, as said brush will remove skin and meat faster than it will paint, apparently. Now, where's the peroxide?

I get so ticked off at the crew when I see them using those things in oposition to the way they were instructed.

ALWAYS make metal contact on the right hand side of the grinder so it is trying to pull away from you, instead of AT you. There are places that this can not be done, but most of the time accidents can be reduced.

Once you get a scuff, it is easy to remeber how you got it, I always thought a YT fourm being dedicated to saftey issues would be a great thing. Many of us have scars to prove it can happen.

I will add to that to never use one with a short sleeve shirt. I had a wire fly off the other day and hit me right in the forearm. It hit right in the middle of one of the big veins. Bleed like a son of a gun and after I pulled it out, the skin swelled up about 3/8 inch. After the swelling went down, it turned black and blue. Made about a 2 inch circle before it finally went away in a week.

Wanna get hurt even quicker? I was grinding a small piece of steel on a bench grinder one time, pushing pretty hard and slipped. Ran a knuckle right against the stone. That went right to the bone in a big hurry. Many many years ago and I've still got the scar.

You ain't justa kiddin.I was doing the same on a radiator. It got about a half acre of skin on my left wrist. I declare it is so sensitive after it healed, more pain now than when it was raw.

Yup! The ones that are REALLY good for reconstructing your anatomy are the blades that you use for hoof trimming on a 4" grinder. Look like a cheese grater, and they'll carve meat and bone even faster than they do hooves. Local farmer nearly died when he was holding a hoof between his legs and the grinder got away from him--took enough out of the inside of his thigh to make a good-sized hamburger and just barely missed the big artery there. Lucky someone was with him that knew enough first aid to put on pressure and get the most of the bleeding stopped. A buddy also nearly lost the use of his hand due to nerve damage when the same thing happened while trimming hooves.

When using a cupped brush on a 4" grinder, use a woven wire brush, not the straight wire. The straight wire will fly all over the place. The woven brush doesn't

I still have a wire in my right arm. It bleed a little at first when it went in & was sore for a day or two but never really bothered. Thought I would mention it to the doc but haven't been there yet.

Should wear gloves and face shield too when using a power wire brush. In my foolish youth while being "immortal".I must have picked up a few wire pieces.
Checked with x-rays to ensure no metal fragments in my eyes before a MRI. Didn't think about the rest of myself.
I came out of the mri machine with bloody spots on the hands, arms and face. The magnetism pulled the metal right out through my flesh in what ever direction was easiest.
Mri machine was so noisy, didn't even notice the pain until afterwards.

I have a couple of scars on my left arm; one from a grinding disc, the other from a wire wheel.

Wouldn't kill you to wear a full leather apron either. *NOTE* Wire wheels, especially straight type wire wheels readily shed their wire into your body, through clothing. Knurled wire wheels are not quite so bad but still throw wire...

You don't even realize there's wires in your arm until they itch or you take your long sleeves off. A lot of schools and welder training facilities don't allow any wire brushes on angle grinders. Sanding discs, cut off discs and flexible grinding wheels can also shatter and cause injury.
I had an MRI years ago and they had to check for metal in my eyes since I'm a welder. I jokingly asked them if my head would go clank against the side of the machine if there was metal in it. Apparently some people fall asleep having an MRI done. I don't know how... inside of a jack hammer. Dave

Rod, are you crazy? I live in the hottest place in North Florida! I was about to have a heat stroke as it was. Just kidding, my F.I.L., a retired welder with nuclear certification, made the same comment. Even those 3 pairs for $5 gloves with cuffs would have prevented this particular incident.

I think most people here have stuck their finger in a wire wheel wheel one way or another.I know I have done my share. Stan

I like your tip "always make contact with the right side of the wheel to pull away from your body" I used to work with a fellow that would turn upside down to do the opposite. I got where I would leave the job while he used the grinder so I wouldn't have to see his insides all over the floor. Lucky enough he is still alive, but doesn't work with me any more.

Guilty as Charged, I got growled for sleeping in the MRI. I didn't know I was supposed to stay awake. The jackhammer thing? yeah, and I'm the operator in there, bustin up old concrete in my dreams.
