Truck problems

Got this Mitsubishi mighty max truck that is giving me fits. Runs ok as long as you keep the gas tank full, drop to below about 3/4 of a tank and you may or may not get where your going. When cold it will run just find for about 10-15 minutes then act up. Engine surges if you try to go any place and if you try long enough it will die but start right back up surge then die again and you can keep doing that for hours and it just keeps not running like it should. Spray carb cleaner in the intake (fuel injected 4 cylinder 1993. Replaced the fuel filter not long ago so that should not be the problem. I'm think as does the local shop that I know thinks the same that the fuel pump is going bad.
Any educated guesses as to what is wrong???
Thanks
Oh and by the way at one time today all 3 of my cars/truck where broke down. But at least the other 2 where or are simple fixes

Wish it was that easy. Have you ever tried to find metric pipe fittings so you can hook up a gauge to them?? I know I call the parts place and found out that they do not have them and the gauge they sell does not have them.

Well, two choices then . Either throw parts at it till something fixes it .Or find someone that will check it out on site or have it towed into shop . Might be cheaper in the long run .

Towed are you kidding I haul tractors all the time why have it towed???????? As for a shop even the guys at the shop said checking fuel pump pressure could be hard to do because if the metric fittings. Ya guess you now see I did my home work here before asking on this site

Lol ,,yea I forgot about the hauling . Just haul it lil father then up to my shop lol ! Really the fittings are either the mitsu o-ring rail fitting , or common banjo fitting. Wait ,,not like dueling banjo's , sorry ,lol How soon you need truck running ? Lemme see if I have my spare gauge and fittings I could ship you . Will check in the morning

ok so from full to 3/4 tank no trouble if you fill it back up at 3/4 tank will it run right or have fits?
i dont have a book on them trucks so i cant look to see is the pump in tank or frame mounted? if its in tank it may be the pump getting hot and slowing down.
have you check the pump relay to see if its getting hot?
i dont know about mits trucks but the cars i have worked on had oil presser switchs that cut off the pump if the oil presser gets low if this switch is bad or if the motor is warming up and the oil presser drops it will stop the pump and die but will restart and run till the computer gets imput from the oil senser that it needs to stop.
may be one or none of this but its somethiing to look at.

Well with out adding a gauge for oil can not be sure but yep tank fuel gauge and from what the local shop say most likely the pump. Pretty much the same truck as the small dodge truck both made by the same company which of course is not dodge.

On the EFI it is an o-ring set up but at the filter where you should check it they are metric pipe fittings which is where I run into the problem. PSI at that point should be 38psi which to me seems low but hey that is spec. As long as I run it here on the farm it is just fine but try to go to town 7 miles and you walk back home BTDT today. Sister picked me up and came home and got my bigger truck and drove o town to pick up the small truck and drove the small one on like it had never had a problem. I have hated this truck since I got it about a year ago and still hate it. I do not like automatics never have and never will

Look for a fuel pressure regulator somewhere on the fuel rail. I believe there is one on that year truck. If it has a regulator on the fuel rail, unhook and plug the vacuum line from it. See if it runs better with it unhooked. Unhooking the vacuum line from the regulator will increase the pressure if the pump has any extra capacity. Another thing I have done on occasion when i don't have a particular fitting to hook a fuel guage up, I will modify a fuel filter to allow hooking a guage up. Some Mitsu's can be very difficult to take a fuel pressure reading. hope this helps,

From what you say sounds like the line I see going to the front of what I would call the manifold but I see it has a low pressure line so that could be what your talking about

Old, Fuel pressures were lower on older vehicles. Today up over 55 psi. I have gone to salvage yards to take parts off of vehicles to make into special tools like what you need. Don't know what you have for salvage yards out near Lebanon.

Lebanon is 25 miles from me but yes they have more then Camdenton does. Yep understand making tools from junk parts and have done so in the past. Also yep on the pressure they are suppose to put out 38psi as per the book. Now as far as getting a piece of junk pipe for what I want most yards in this area would just laugh or charge an arm and leg just because it is the odd ball want

That was already done and they said fuel pump also. I have the tank out but now I have another problem which I have since found is common. Both lines rusted so badly that when the tank came out they broke off so now I need to find that part also.
