Jim - explain what you mean by "start in the middle for the last raking". I've raked hay all my life, but I'm missing your point.

I like to make two rounds all the way around the field first thing, to get me away from the fences and hat snatchers. But I'm using a 50's era rake instead of the nice V-rakes that the big boys use.

I know that with V rakes, it's easiest to rake trhe middle first and then do the outside rounds, as it's easier to turn around on the ends when their now fluffed up from raking and then the rake will also make nice clean windrows on the headlands if the rake teeth catch any and drag it around some.

Sometimes I'll rake the center first with our old farmhand style wheel rake as well. then when I do the outside rounds, again they look cleaner and I can start on the inside of the headlands, roll them all inward, and then when baling we can just go one direction to bale the headlands.
