Happy 100th Uncle

My Mom's Brother turned 100 today ,, Although Officially by US govr'nt He will not be 100 til Monday ...seems the TerreHaute Archdiocese was a little lax in recording accurately in 1910 ,,, today, THEY went to church then to IHOP breakfast with friends,, On Way home He noticed his ChrySler VAN (he trusts Chyrsler products all his life ,AND ,YES, HE STILL DRVES VERY WELL ) was steering a little Awkward And resoned he could make it home SAFELY, before the tire went Flat , AND HE DID , I offered to drive to Louisville to change it ,, but My aunt told me They had already called Triple A .. BtWay ,, He and DAD enlisted early in 1942 , Dad went mechanized infantry ..Uncle served in WW2 in the CBs , Because of his heavy German accent , the ARMY higher ups Suggested he TEST to be a spy or work in the CB's for fear other soldiers would prejudice his German Accent , ..My German family roots in AMERICA go back to 1819, But Ferdinand INd is predominantly German even today ,, ...

Congrats! My grandfather made it to just short of his 102nd birthday.

Sounds like your uncle has a lot of life left yet.

Congratulations to your uncle on his 100th birthday.

Please extend a hearty handshake to him for me and thank him for his military service.

My cousin's father, Uncle John, was born in Germany and immigrated to the US after WWI.

Uncle John learned to fly an airplane in his early teens and became a B17 pilot during WWII.

He was stationed in Italy and flew combat missions over Germany.

Told me that he was shot down 3 times over Germany.

Said he had no problem "escaping" through Germany and France because he spoke the language fluently.

Real problems started when he got to the Allied lines.

Said with his German accent, US soldiers thought he was either an infiltrator or spy.

He also flew the B29 on combat missions over North Korea.

Said he would fly low and "strafe" some targets with the B29.

Was proud that he never lost a B29.

Uncle John was a real character; liked him alot.

Congrats to your uncle!
One of mine was 99 when he pasted away. Most all the uncles were well into their late 80-90's on Dad's side BBUUTT on Mom's side seems like there's some stroke and Alzheimers.

Always did like Dad best!

Whoops - Just finished reading.
Dad's parent's came from Emden, Germany and settled in Emden, Illinois. Still remember Dad talking "broken" german to my Grandma.
But he spent a lot of time in WW II and then got the "opportunity" to help in Korea.

Hi Jim; Hope you and I can corespond when we are 100yrs. As for now, lets make the best of our future. How did you make out with the pto in your 1070? Shoot me an e-mail on what's happening down there.

I used to have a good friend, Ralph Charles, Who flew till he was 102 years old and broke his hip.. He flew and maintained an old Aeronca defender, WW11 liason aircraft. He had a small farm and maintained his own airstrip on the farm. His pilot's license was number 29 and signed by orville Wright. The whole aviation community celebrated his 100th birthday in 1998. All the major aviation magazines and trade papers had representatives there. The party was at his farm and many of his friends flew in for the celebration. Ralph was from Thornville, Ohio and at the time was the oldest active pilot in the country. He died in 2002 at age 104... Gene

Thanks for sharing your story; very interesting.

His pilot"s license signed by Orville Wright hopefully is treasured by one of his heirs.

Unfortunately, Ralph died with no heirs. His original license was lost by the FAA during a period of inactivity demanded by a wife of 50 years who forbade his flying. He resumed his flying after her passing.

Ralph was also a craftsman whose hobby was building musical organs. His entire basement was taken up by an organ he had built. It was such a fine instrument that many named musicians came to play on it. Some had even recorded their sessions and had them published.
Ralph had perfect eyesight and at 100 years, passed his FAA medical exam with no glasses. An envy to all of us "younger" pilots.
