OT: fescue seed

My son has the chance to combine about 60 acres of fescue seed. I have not cut any in over 30 years. What is an average yield in the south. What does it bring when cleaned and bagged. He can get it for free.
Thanks, Richard

It's been a long time since I cut any, but 500 pounds in a good year mught be a ball park figure. I'm in SC, it is no longer a good year here because the fescue is overripe and the rains have beat most of the seed out.

Fescue seed is cheaper this year. You could expect to get 1/2 to 2/3 the price of seed in the store. Ask your local seed store or TSC what they are getting for fescue seed now. I suspect what they have in the store now is old stock seed since getting seed dry, cleaned and in the store by now is a bit of a push.

If you are in the upper south there may be more seed still in the field. Just got back from a trip to the midwest and just from casual noticing the fescue it looked far along everywhere.

What rains??
It has rained all around the upstate but here in southwest Oconee, we are dry. The seed are still in the heads, but you are right. It want last much longer. Where are you located?

Hi, Richard,

I'm just south of Spartanburg. It's rained on ripe fescue here. Fescue is dead ripe. Probably a little behind up where you are and maybe will cut good. If you get a windy rain before cutting now they won't be much left.

Just finished cutting seed last week in Central NC. Evening showers knocked alot of it out averaged around 140# per acre. After cleaning this years price looks to be around $32. Slow the cylinder down easy to crack this late!
