Farmall quits again!

Just got to bale some hay on Saturday, wanted to use my H on the hay rake, "since I havent brought my Ford 1720 to the farm yet" well after 20 minutes of running at 3/4 throttle it spit, sputtered and quit. 10seconds later it started up again. Fuel screen, bowl is clean, someone this winter on here said see if the ignition coil gets hot when it stalls, I checked it and it wasent hot. I really dont have time to monkey with this tractor, but what could I be over looking to make it keep stalling? Thanks JayinNY

Jay...here's a few things too check.

1. Make sure someone hasnt installed an inline fuel filter..if so, remove it.
2. Remove the inlet line coming into the carb, it sounds like there is a restriction in the fuel line and its not letting enough fuel thru too keep it running at higher rpm.......
Make sure fuel is freely running thru the lines and getting into the fuel bowl, sometimes the inlet on the carb can become plugged also.

These are a few of the major things....but I'm leaning toward a fuel prob.!

Look for a loose wire on the on and off button. I had that happen on a C IH and finally I started wiggling wires all over and finally discovered one that was just loose enough to occasionally shut it off.
It also could be bad fuel cap being after a while it will restart.

Bring your Ford out then you won't have to "monkey with it". Problem solved. Then you can sell me your H cheap, since you don't seem to like it much.

Or, it's gotta be fuel or spark, right? Take 15 minutes, when you're in the right state of mind, to check all there is to check and figure it out. Could be junk in the tank sloshing around and intermittantly clogging. That takes about 15 seconds. You can disconnect the line to the carb and make sure it's got a good solid stream for a minute or so. Could be some crud got loose in the carb and a needle is sticking, or your float is stuck. Have you ever cleaned your carb? We don't know the history of your tractor like you do, or what kind of maintenance, if any, you've given it.

I second the idea of the condensor. Just put a whole points and condensor in my 44 H. Cost me a whole 11.95 or something like that from my local Farm and Fleet. It is most likely electrical, something heating up and quiting. But since you said the coil wasn't hot, I would take a look inside the distributor! Good luck to ya!

Remove your sediment bowl under the gas tank and turn the gas on. It should squirt out in two streams. They maybe somethin in the tank that is covering up the fuel tank outlet, especially if you've had the tank sealed with some sort of sealer or coating. That has a tendancy to flake off over 15 years or so. Or you may have water in your fuel. Water should show up in your sediment bowl. These are just two things that has happened to me. Checking these things don't cost any thing so that's what I would check first before replacing any parts unnecessarily. Let us know what you find.

When it quits running pull off a plug wire asap
before it get's cool and see if there's fire from your plug wire as a helper makes an attempt to start the engine with the ignition switch on.

If there's no fire I would replace the condenser
then see if that fixes the problem. If it still quits replace the coil. Hal

I'll second that. last saturday i found i had the same trouble on my super c. it has the new pressure fuel cap with the 2 pinholes in the top. they get plugged with dirt. it would run fine, then suddenly die. a minute later it would start right up again, only to die again in a few min. unplugged the holes and all is well.

My H did the same thing, dirt in the fuel tank caused the problem as it would not allow fuel to get from the tank to the sediment bowl in quantity. It will idle fine, however, under load it will intermittenly stall out. Drain your tank and give it a good cleaning. You can remove your tank if necessary, however, I did not, just drained, let dry, and shop vac'd all the dirt and rust out. She's been purring like a kitten now two years later!

My guess is the on/off switch. Do a continuity check on it. turn it on and off a couple of time with meter hooked on.
