OT Warships Transit Suez

I went throught the Suez with the Enterprise battlegroup back in '86 on our way to Lebanon. Was quite an experience. Wonder if the same things are in store for Iran that we gave to old Omar Q. It's kind of a big deal moving a carrier through there, not done on a whim.

I went through on the USS America back during the first Gulf War. If you look at pics taken during he transit, with 4 plus acres of flight deck looming way up in the air, it looks at times like the ship is actually wider than the canal. It's definately a once in a lifetime thing.

Yep. I was part of an all nuke group that left the Indiana Ocean and chopped into the Med Fleet with The Big E, the Arkansas, another CGN, and I was on the Truxtun, right behind the Enterprise all the way through. At times I think the flightdeck really was hanging over land.

Could still see burned-out tanks and jeeps along the way from who knows which wars. Was a little spooky, had all the guns manned-up and missiles on the rails.

Read in the news last week that Israel has 2 subs up in the Gulf of Oman heading toward Iran. That's a big deal. I wonder if this is it?

I was stationed on the USS Coral Sea CVA-43 back in Vietnam. You are right,..carriers do not go through "narrow" waterways without a purpose. They are real vunerable when in confined areas, especially during times of war. I assume they are on a mission of "Show of Force" as a deterent. Will be interesting to see what if anything developes. Usually battle groups of ships deploy with no fanfare.

I think my ship was with yours in Nam. I've read quite a bit and remember them saying how the Truxtun was in the Gulf of Tonkin a lot, 2 or three tours, and seems like I remember it was with the Coral. Do you remember it?

I wouldn't think so either. But Iran is sending some ships to try that blockade, maybe there is some intelligence we don't know about yet. They sure don't need a carrier to keep an eye on that deal. And with those Israeli subs up in the Golf of Oman, sounds like something's up.

Like I said, moving a carrier on short notice thru the Suez definately sounds alarms.

Your ship sounds familar. We had several escort ships and supply ships during our WestPac Cruises". Didn"t always have the same Destroyers behind us since ship rotation "on Station" varied. sometimes we had ships from the East Coast out there. The USS America was our relief on my first deployment.
I do know that the USS Chicago and the New Jersey stayed with us for about five months out of the ten months that we were deployed. They docked right behind us when we were in Subic Bay for R&R.
