cut my losses

Went out this morning and baled up the hay I had cut about 2 weeks ago that got rained on about 5 times. It was all wet and moldy under the wind row and the top of the windrow was dry and moldy. Cloud of green mold dust coming out of baler. I didn't even bother turning it to dry it out. Just baled it up wet and loose as I will pile it on edge of corn field and spread it out this fall. 201 bales of the worst hay you have ever seen. What's a guy to do.

flyingbelgian,

Sorry for your loss. I lost about 125 bales last year. The hay was already baled when the rain started. It lasted off and on for 10 days. I finally picked up the bales and threw them into a ravine on the back of my farm.

At the end of the winter, I had to buy 250 bales of hay to finish winter feeding. I paid $4.00 per bale for what I bought.

Farming is a real challenge.

Sometimes things don"t work out. Can you sell the hay for cow feed. Cows will eat about anything. Out here in Calif during hard times farmers would burn thorns off of cactus leaves and feed it to their cows. Dad sold a lot of lima bean straw as cow feed when he farmed. Stan

Neighbor mowed hay last week just before we had a week of rain. I saw him heading out to the field late this afternoon with his forage chopper and no wagon. He was just chopping it back on the field. Which works if you have a little wind to spread the old stuff out.

Every time you guys cut hay it rains. I wished you all would knock it off for a week or two until I get my beans seeded. Even the ducks in this country are moving to higher ground!

Yep wouldn't you know it. I cut hay today, got one round done and forgot that I was going to fix a problem with my MOCO clogging at the out side end. Wife was walking out with the phone. Got a call from a guy who needed help fixing his pull behind brush hog. Went and helped him and go it running. Got back home a few hours later and went out to cut hay again. 2 or 3 times around the field and stopped to get a drink and got a call from another guy wanting help to hook up a NH451 sickle mower to his IH1086, did you know it can not be done. Any how yep it rained on my hay. Guess we need to fire the weather guessers since thay have not gotten it right yet this year. Oh ya they said no rain for the next 4 or 5 days till tonight and now every other day

Don't feel so bad. One of the last tomato farmers left around here has 200 acres,Market is $3 a box. He is not going to pick a one.

Lots of bad 1st cutting here in Northern Indiana. A lot of it looks like 1/2 rotten straw.

Dairy farmer friend puts most of his in wrapped round bales for haylage so he doesn't have to worry so much about drying it.

Hopefully things will dry some for 2nd cutting.

around here we dry the junk hay then bale it in short light bales and sell it in the fall to the yuppies for lawn decorations. About four years ago a friend with a good spot in town was getting $6.00 for them.

Don't know where you are, but down here they use a lot of square bales for erosion control at road construction sites.
