Way O/T Bullheads in Pond

My BIL's BIL has a pond and would like the bullheads removed. Problem is, he has a lot of bluegills/sunfish/hybrids that he doesn't want killed or caught. My wife and I fished this afternoon using chicken livers on a 1/8 ounce bass jig head. We couldn't get it to the bottom without the bluegills engulfing it. Lots of fun, but not the project. She did catch a nice 24" channel cat. Bluegills are around 9 or 10" and very solid. Bullheads far smaller.

I think the only way to catch the bullheads is with a fish trap--like a minnow trap but bigger. They are illegal here, but in a private pond at the request of the owner I wouldn't be too concerned, as a last resort. Any other ideas? I thought sure chiken livers would be a safe bait. Maybe small, dead bluegills or minnows?

You need some bottom feeders like catfish. You can shock them and they will come to the top, but I would let the pond fish mix balance out.Sounds like the Bluegils need thinned out to me. Nothing better that Bluegill fillets.Channel Cats are excellent eating too.

Trapping is about the only way without destroying the other fish population. We use liver in pantyhose. If you know any river fishermen, a big blue cat or flathead will clean them out in a hurry (and some of the panfish). Then the question becomes how to get the big cats back out!

Blue gils? Give it time, they will over populate that pond and eat all of the food, and that alone will kill off the bullheads as well as the other fish. The only thing that will be left will be lots and lots of small over populated blue gils, and then he'll be sticking a pike or two in there to thin out the blue gils.

that is what we used was flatheads in a freind of mines pond. the flats will only get as big as the enviorment will allow. at least that is what i have read.

Catch them and eat them. You must be watching those fishing shows where all the fish caught get thrown back.Horn pout and sun fish are the best eating.

fish at dark for the bullheads.some large bass will keep bluegills in check....they say you should only have the small mouthed bluegill in ponds.........

I skin the sun fish and roll them in pancake mix then fry in butter and olive oil.I like them much better than bass.A Mepps spinner will catch the larger perch and sun fish.A black foam spider on a fly rod will catch plenty of sunfish.
