thanks jim i am looking at buying a 8n for my 12 acre hobby farm i really ony need it for brush hogging and a blade and boom pole and maybe a post hole auger, the tractors ive seen with the sherman are a little more expensive, is that trans something, in your opinion that i should be concerned with having?? any advice is greatly appreciated

BM:

I've both 51 and 52 8Ns with Sherman combination transmissions and believe that the combination transmission, unlike the step up (only) is a considerable improvement to any 8N.

That said, if I were to buy a single tractor for use with a bush hog and post hole auger, I would spend a bit more and buy something with live PTO.

Yer welcome....Sherman won't help much with mowing as the PTO's on the 'N's are transmission driven. Since, the Sherman installs in FRONT of the main trans, it effectively 'splits' the main trans....thus, PTO is affected by the SAME ratio.

It DOES do a nice job of making blades and cultivators more user/condition friendly.

Post hole augers REALLY benefit from the Sherman 'reversers' if you have very rocky soil or want to drill around tree roots. When the auger gets 'stuck' and screws itself into the ground(and lift your front wheels OFF the ground!), simply engage the reverser and back it out.

Typing is a (SLOW)2 finger enterprise for me. If you want to talk Shermans, CALL my cell #....(559)859-4948

The gooooo new idea is best cause friend has an 2N and turned into a money pit.

Series of tractor has killed more than most.
