O/T- About the young man with health problems

Well, after reading the post I felt pretty fortunate, I'm 34 and have never really had health problems. Woke up yesterday to the worst pain in my foot. Drove for 3 hours for work and nearly fell when I tried to stand on my right foot when I got out of the truck, Did not sleep at all last night due to the pain. Went to the Doc, he said I have the Gout! I've had broken bones, concussions, crushed fingers, but, I have never felt pain like this in my life. Luckily, doc gave me some pain meds, I'm now on the couch with a dull throb in the foot. Guess I better watch the diet and cut back on the beers. Won't be finishing the prep work on the MF 175 tommorrow. Anybody got any tips or experience with the Gout?

My introduction to it came at age 41. Like you, it was the worst pain of my life, bar none including a near amputation crush of a leg and knee in a farm accident.

As to dealing with it, doc told me a few tips. Some worked, some didnt. As she explained it to me there are two ways to attack it, decrease the amino acidics that cause the crystals to precipitate and lowering the level of the acids in blood. I've eliminated high fructose corn syrup from my diet, which is harder than one thinks. Even most ice cream has it in it. I also reduced the amount of shell fish I eat, to once per week, reduced beer consumption to 6 or less per week, and increased water intake to not less than a gallon per day. When I have a flair up she told me to drink nothing but coffee, tea (neither sweetened), red wine, and water. So far, since I figured out that high fructose corn syrup is my trigger and eliminated it from my diet I havent had any more problems. Cutting out regular soda was easy but the stuff with it in there by stealth was harder, ice cream, chocolate syrup, pan cake syrup, and cranberry juice cocktail snuck me an outbreak.

For some (me included) drinking a glass of unsweetened cherry juice helps. Something in the cherry juice breaks down the urea crystals.

Thanks, that is good info. I have known people with it, and have been concerned about how to avoid it.

I have had the gout several times. Been laid up in bed for a week it was so bad. Worst pain ever. And it gets worse every time you get it. Caan eventullay cause severe arthritus in the joints. In me eating bean soup several days in a row set it off the last time.

I find drinking a glass of cranberry juice every day prevents it for me. keeps my Kidneys working at their peak cleaning my blood.

There is a drug called Allpurinal which prevents it.

Ibuprophen or naproxyn can help relieve the inflamation. If you"re a candidate for heart attacks, naoroxyn should be the choice.

Have had a couple-three attacks, took a couple days of limping around - couldn"t wear shoe on the foot - couldn"t even put shoe on. Hasn"t come back recently, thank goodness.

Growning old ain"t for sissies!

Thanks for the input! I seriously considered getting the chainsaw out at the hotel last night and cutting my foot off! Had to have one of my coworkers help me to the truck this morning, felt like a loser.

I read where they had a study that showed 40% decrerase in flair ups if you would just drink 8 glasses of water per day. Adding a glass of skim milk twice a day slowed the flair up by another 10%.

That is a 50% decrease in symptoms just by drinking water and skim milk.

I had an attack in my elbow during turkey season, could not hold my gun up. Then had an attack in my foot about a week ago. Two trips to the ER.

I am being much more careful about diet and drinking the H out of water now.

good luck, Gene

try tart cherrys.. a old farmer says that it works for him. ive had it (gout) for the last week and its nasty. most times it gos in about 3 or 4 days but this time its been about a week or so and is gitting better after a trip ot the doc and some pills. good luck to you all. Bob ps yes i know about wanting to cut the ol foot off!

Just try and take that stuff with a meal to ease any affects on your stomach, taking a lot over a period of time can cause problems on an empty stomach.

A friend who has gout stopped by yesterday. His Dr. said to drink lots of water, not much alcohol, don't eat a lot of meats, his problem was if he ate pork it set his off and he loves sausage.

It comes and goes for me. Watch out for fish. Drink coffee any kind. Also find things in health food stores(GOUTROL) Still drink sips of wine but never beer. Good Luck. A real PAIN it is.
