I just picked up what I thought was a Farmall M. I was looking to find the serial number but the tag on it is missing. Where can I find the serial number is it stamped on the engine or rearend ? Also the original color paint is yellow. Its was painted red and has faded M decal's on it. Is it still a M or is it a McCormick Deering I-6? It is a narrow front with pto and hyd. No belt drive. I don't Even know what year it is.

Never saw an I-6 with a narrow front, so I am guessing it is an M industrial past. I had an H once that had been painted orange by the highway department. Talk about ugly. There was some red lacquer paint under the orange but the lacquer is so thin it was hard to find.

Also heard rumor once of yellow primer.

I have an H with yellow under red and it is pretty ugly. The good side is that it is just a work tractor so it doesn't have to look nice. I apply the same principle to myself, too.

It is not uncommon to hear of "yellow" paint, some of the primers back then would turn color when the final coat was sprayed on or over the years the primer changed color, in any event lots of yellow found under paint when you start sanding and restoring old tractors. Very common.

Probably a tractor from the war years. Due to restrictions, IH couldn't get "their" red color so they made due with a different red that tended to fade to a yellow-red color over time. I have a W9 that shows the "yellow" paint. That's probably what you have, although IH would paint a tractor any color you wanted as long as you paid up front, so a yellow M is possible.
