Ram Brake / Speedo Fault

My 99 1500 4x4 Ram has the ABS and Brake warning lights on, and the speedo stopped working below about 25mph. We are currently seeding wet conditions and the truck is pretty well plugged up with mud underneith. I am assuming the problem is the sensor on the rear diff housing? I pulled the plug and it looks ok, but not sure how to check the sensor or the wiring. Truck has rear wheel abs only.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Chris

Besides the obvious road rash and moisture damage to the sensor and it's wiring, you might pull it out of the axle and see how many metal filings are stuck to the INSIDE part. (It has an internal magnet and REALLY attracts filings.)

Thanks Bob, I pulled the sensor but it looked clean, just a couple of tiny metal specks.....I'll probably just try a new sensor. The wiring is pretty ragged, do you know, should there be a hot wire to the sensor with the ignition on?

I could be wrong ,but,,,most speed sensors are in the tranmission . ABS only sensor in rear axle . Most ABS sensors are two wire . They have no power to them . They generate an A/c voltage signal . If your speed sensor in trans failed , it should put your ABS into default mode . Quick check with scan tool will tell you if either of them are bad . Or ,,,,just throw parts at it till is fixed.

Those Dodges DID use the sensor in the axle for the speedo.

I think Dorf did too, at least in the early 90's 4X4's

Right on Bob . Just looked . VSS in rear dif has high failure rate . Also Trans output speed sensor problems .Not near as many fixes as the VSS though .

Thanks for the info Bob and Bryan, I guess its time to pick up a scan tool and check it. Truck has 300,000 km and I haven't ever had a problem that needed it... wandering steering, wobbly wheels, uj's etc, but its always run good.
