Old tractor vs newer tractor?

I thought it was interesting this past planting season when it seemed like I spent a month straight in a 4850 John Deere getting fields worked and ready. The last day of planting beans I finished up planting 15 acres with an 1850 Oliver. I don't do much of the planting, but I was nominated to finish because everybody else was pretty wiped out and tired by the end of the season. Anyway to make a long story short-I really enjoyed running that 1850 almost more than the 4850. Do any of you guys/gals out there enjoy driving the older stuff more than the newer bigger stuff?

My newere stuff was built in 1977, so I'm not sure I can compare, but I got a Ford 5000 without a cab a few years ago to pull th eplanter, and loving it.

Was on another forum a week ago, fella was telling about running the new tractor at 1600rpm all day in the field, got up onto the road & had to go through several menus reprograming it to go down the highway at 2100 rpm.

Wow. I just push the throttle lever forward.

I've thought this compares to riding a motorcycle. When the weather and conditions are good sometimes it's nice to be out in the open-- when it's good it's good, but when it's bad it's bad.

For day after day fieldwork I enjoy the modern stuff. The newer the better. The new tractors are quieter, smoother, more comfortable for an older body to ride in. And the gadgets are fun to play with. But when fieldwork is over I can't wait to get on the old simple cabless tractors again. Jim

What is old and new tractor? We have one neighbor that farms a few thousand acres and his newest big tractor is a Steiger Panther. Another guy has a big Fendt with more options than my car. Those 50 series John Deeres are good old
workhorses, but I think they stopped making them
in the 1980s.

Interesting question on a site called "Yesterdays Tractor". I enjoy the sound of the engine pulling, the smell of the dirt turning. I guess the GPS and auto-guidance kind of take the horsepower, do it yourself feel out of farming.

Paul,I still use/and love my SuperM to plant,among other things.3 yrs ago,I planted 80 acres(small fields)in 3 days with a 6 row 3 point planter..JD 70 Flex(1960)

It"s fun and nice to be able to use the old stuff...I amd thinking significantly older than an 1850 although they are a great tractor! In fact I often invent or create ways to use the oduns...but day in day out under the gun need to get it done n make the money work...gimme new...hydros, powershifts, shuttles, programs...Git R Done. There"s a reason they aren"t still makin" Super Ms and JD 70s anymore.

Always pulled my planter (IH 56 4 row) with a super H and if I were doing it today I would use the same tractor, ran real cheap and had enough power to do the job. But understand farming today is alot about finances and subsidies and tax deductions. you can own old equipment and pay taxes or have new

I've had the opportunity to help friends using tractors only a few years old, but none of them compare to my grandfather's JD "A" thumpin away while cutting hay with a 7' sickle mower!

Fella didn't know how to run it. Most big tractors now have rpm setpoint for field and road, usually just a button to swap between them once they are set. It actually is very handy for some stuff.

Old stuff is fun to run, but not all day.

The 1850 was pretty advanced for its day though. Not much changed right on up to the last whites. Very popular in potato country here.

Yep,I've got an 1850 and a Series 3 White 2-135. I've had a 40 series Deere and that Series 3 White has a better cab, but, that said,I use the 1850 for about everything around here unless there's a good reason to be in the cab.

Still kind of hard to beat a good old 4430.The best of both worlds in my mind.

ive worked on a farm with newer tactors and i will drive the old iron over the new iron ANY day, although the new ones are nice too.
