john deere b stalls out, help.

my friend has just bought a 51 deere b.He tries to take it for a ride but after about 20 minutes or so it will sputter and quit like its out of gas. Then it wont restart for awhile. My thought was a bad float in the carb.I took my carb off and put it on his and it started smoother and ran better but still quit like before.Im thinking that only leaves electrical issues. It has a mag. Im looking for ideas.Keep in mind Im a rookie myself so dont get real technical. Thanks in advance from both of us.

When it sputters out after 20 mins always check the spark immediately. Pull a plug. Should have a bright bluiush white spark that will jump at least 3/8". Yellowish or feeble means electrics not carb.

I would expect fuel problems. Your carburetor could be running out of gas because the flow from the tank is insufficient to keep up with the engines needs. When it stops running, immediately open the drain on the carburetor. If the flow is low or non-existent, clean your fuel lines. Also, try to run it with the gas tank cap loose. These old caps have been known to seal the vent and cause a vacuum in the tank and stop the fuel flow.

Replace the ignition condenser.
Look for junk floating just off the bottom of the fuel tank. It will gradually pull down into the bowl screen and plug flow. After the engine stops the gunk floats away and allows a re-start.

Make sure you stand away from where the plug goes. When you turn the engine over, gas vapor will come out and you could get sprayed. If you have a spark, you could get burned.

thank you all for your advice.Things I didnt know till after I posted this is.When he got the tractor it had a regular ball valve and plastic hose running from the tank to the carb.He has since put in the new setiment bowl, and fuel line. This problem came with the tractor. So the new stuff didnt change anything.I did think about the gas flow being cut off or slowed down before but wasnt sure the best way to check.I will do that first. Then on to the other ideas. Once again, thanks all of you. Will let you know how it turns out even if it takes awhile.
