injector or pump problem?

I got a 4 cylinder direct injection diesel. Sometimes it shoots a massive amount of smoke from the exhaust. After shutting the throttle down, it takes a few seconds for the engine run out of fuel and slow down, then it runs better. Never knocks. Sometimes it runs ok,maybe a little uneven. Is this a pump or injector problem? An injector stuck open would make the engine knock, wouldn't it?

I would pull the injectors and have them checked. It is common for a diesel to smoke a little on starting. The knock could be coming from an injector sticking open. Which would cause it to over fuel. If it is open the spray will not be as it should. You would have solid fuel going in instead of a fine spray.
