OT How to kill a cat

I know a few ways to do it out here where I live. Gunfire does not attract a lot of attention and there is plenty of places to bury it. But a friend who lives in a metro area in another state has an old cat that is a mess, the do gooder vet won't put it down. Wants to do a bunch of procedures and sell her an expensive special diet to feed the thing.
Any suggestions on how to put it out of its misery with out a lot of fuss and mess?
A heavy dose of codine was a thought but the worry was a cat that would be flipping out and puking or whatever.

Take it to the city pound or ASPCA and for a small fee, they'll put it down for him.

(quoted from post at 18:00:33 06/06/10) antifreeze maybe?? I hear its really toxic to the little furry things...

Antifreeze is one of the least humane ways. It takes days of misery.

Something like vehicle exhaust tubed into a carrier would be much better.

Thats what i was afraid of... Scratch that...

Maybe a pellet gun?? Stronger than a bb gun, not
much noise, and should go through the back of its
head pretty easy....

I concur, go to another vet.

The second option is animal control or your county animal shelter which is probably one and the same. I'm sure they will put it down but they usually aren't set up to allow you to be present if that is something you wish.

I again say find another vet and explain you situation--they should understand--you just got a bad one.

Use ether, i.e., starting fluid. Put it on a rag and hold it over the mouth/nose of poor kitty (if the ol' cat will tolerate it without scratching yer eyes out). It is basically the same ether as used to be use on people.
Had to shoot my dog not so long ago.... it is never easy. My condolences.

I'll tell you what worked for the wife last fall. She made a special trip to town to get a bag of cat food and when she came home and pulled into the garage, she ran over the cat.
We've got a drug here called Micotil for cattle. The vet says it'll kill every animal but cattle including humans. I've heard tell of a few accidental deaths in humans with it,but I don't remember what the effects are. Don't know if it's a painful death or not.

A friend of mine used his AR 15 rifle in .223 to kill a tomcat that was stalking his chickens.

Seriously, go to another vet. I put down my old cat by a visiting vet. Not cheap though.

If you are worried about the money then do the carbon monoxide treatment......a bit cruel but cheap.

yes if they lived near me I have a few different calibers that would do it quickly. Heck I could probably make some money on the side by selling chances to off the thing, sort of like a turkey shoot.
Problem with the vet is in their area they have a strong PETA group that resists killing pets.

If your going to use ether, buy the pharmaceutical grade. I tried to use starting fluid on my cat to neuter him and all that happened was the cat got a good case of convulsions. Starting fluid has petroleum distillates plus ether.

I agree with your politics fully and your suggestion of what to do with barry's skull was spot on....but...you are a "gun guru" and you paid a vet to put a worthless cat down? I mean come on already. are you just breaking our a55?

This was 6 years ago and the wife was very serious about it being done humanely.....But a bullet would have been way cheaper.
I was very attached to the cat, but she was 8 years old and her litter box smelled so bad and the cat's health couldnt be improved due to failing kidneys. (I would have liked to go the cheap route with a shotgun)
And....I had to take off work early so my son was in daycare at the time and I had to have it done while he wasnt home.

I don't think it's too cruel. It's probably the most painless method that's been suggested here so far.

Yeah, you had better go to another vet though. If someone sees you euthanize your own cat in a metro area, there will surely be police involvement.

a .22 short and rifle shoting though a rag an inch from the head and inside a garage don't let much sound into the street.

If you have put the cat down, take it to another vet. It's more expensive that the .22 route, but what if you miss, or make a bad shot? I'm a softy when it comes to cats so I could not even think about shooting one. Coons, groundhogs and other nuisance animals? Yep.
