OT Dehumidifiers

I have 2 older (30 yrs) dehumidifiers that don't work the way they used to. They frost up too easy and run too long. Is this a sign of low freon? If so can they be recharged or is this a lost cause? Can the old freon be mixed with the newer coolants?
Thanks

Yes, yes, yes, no.
They can freeze the coils from low freon and also from operating in a low temperature....say 55 degrees. I suppose someone can recharge them but it won't be you and it's cheaper to buy a new one. So, they're a lost cause if they need a charge. You can't mix coolants.

And I can even make this tractor related. LOL
Does anyone else use the water from their dehumidifier for mixing with antifreeze and filling batteries in their tractors?
Is the water from the dehumidifier pure enuf?

Hello 550Doug,
If the unit/s are that old they may have R12 in them, it is cheaper to by gold.
Anyhow, take some time and check the units when they are working. The condenser should feel pretty warm to the touch. Don't touch the copper coil close to the compressor, there it will be HOT! Good air flow is the only way they will pick up humidity. If the fan is not working, or slow it may be the problem.
Thake a good look at both coils and clean them, a little wire brush will work fine. It also will straigthen the fins on the condenser coil out.
Guido.

Clean the coils and fan blades and oil the fan motors, if possible, to get as much airflow as possible.

Yes, it's distilled. I've done it but found it's faster to just spend a buck and get a gallon from the store. I don't use that much and my dehumidifiers dump into a drain.

As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I do. I like my old dehumidifier because it has a bucket as well as a screw type connector for a hose to drain the unit. I have a short hose connected to it and a 5 gallon container. The 5 gallon container needs about 12 to 15 days to fill up, then I just stock pile it for battery use and other distilled water uses.
Some newer units still have a hose connector but they've gone electronic and complicated!!

We use a dehumidifier in the basement. In a normal year it is in use about 6 months. I do use a window unit down there, but usually only during July and August. So an A/C is not a real replacement.
