JD Cultivator: Is it worth anything??

Well guys... In the spring of 2009, i bought this old jd cultivator for $50 or $75 off a farmer i was working for at the time, and now im not too sure what im gonna do with it...

I was thinking of painting it up and selling it, but supposedly there not worth too much...

And then i took an interest in welding... And now when i look at it, i see a gigantic hunk of round stock, bar stock, flat stuff and a mountain of angle iron, held together by this gigantic beam that could be the start of a really cool project...

Id like to take it apart and use it as stuff to practice/learn to weld on...

But i dont know if its worth it... Its a really nice machine, and id feel kinda bad about it.

I think its six rows... Is there any demand for these things out there?? Are they collectable?? Im thinking it might be too small to be good for much today, but too big and too new to be collectable...

It is a 4 row cultivator, and you are correct - too small to be worth much, not really collector material, GMO crops have eliminated using cultivators in many areas any more.

It could be worth $300 to the right person, but likely only $100....

I don't care what color it is, a cultivator is a cultivator, no one uses them around here anymore. Worth about iron value, that is about $130/ton now I think. If it were mine and I had the time I'd take it apart, save bolts, good iron for welding. Like you said, you could use it for practice welding, when you are done with that, then sell it for scrap.

Well... What about the parts off it?? Is there any demand for those springs?? Or the wheels or shanks or whatever??

Well - you bought it for $75. There were a whole bunch made, so the next fella needing partscan buy one for $50 - 150....

Soyea some of the parts can be worth a bit if you have someone who needs parts - but really can't expect to make a whole lot can ya? And have to wait until you run across someone who needs a part or 2....

I will be facing the same question soon with some of my stuff.. if you dont have a use for it, I would save some of the good parts and use other for other projects. I have a 2 row Cole cornplanter for a 140 fast hitch in a neighbors barn, was going to get it this fall so I can see how to make new brackets for my 1 pt fast hitch.
Leave a post here if you dissassemble it - people are always looking for the one last piece they need... have fun welding ...and wear your googles

That looks like a RM4 cultivator. I bought one of those a few years ago and cut it down to a 2 row cultivator for my garden.

Some of the parts are expensive from J.D. but being in the right place at the right time to find someone that needs a part will be a big shot in the dark.

Oh, I hear you there. I got 2 Ford & 1 Imperial 4-row cultivators sitting on the place, as well as a front mount Olliver one......

I managed to sell my front mount IHC model to someone here years ago, but had to deliver it to get $100 for it.

If you can use it then it doesnt matter what its worth. If you have to buy it,then they will want a lot for it,if you want to sell it then nobody will want to give much for it.

Try targeting organic farmers in your area. They pay more for cultivators for mech cultivation and they don't have big tractors. That would sell for 400$ in my area to one of those folks.

If you want to practice fabricating/welding, cut it into 2 pieces, make couple of 2 row cultivators or a two row & a 1 row and sell them. They bring darned good money on Ebay or Craigslist. I took the exact same cultivator & made a dandy 2 row for my sweet corn patch, and a monster 1 row for my pumpkin patch:

Looks to me to be a six row frame with row units reconfigured into a 4 row, with an extra row unit in the middle. Normally, the rear mount cults have just one row unit hanging between rows, with multiple (3-5) shanks per unit. Needs only one row unit to be straightened to use or sell it. If the main beam is 15 feet, it can be set for 6 rows.
