Something is wrong with my Snath

I can't seem to adjust the handles correctly. Maybe some penetrating oil on the threads?
I bought this a year ago last winter. New old stock scythe. In addition to the decal on the handle (snath) there is hint of a sticker still on the blade.
IA Leo's post about pitchforks yesterday reminded me I have some photos of it.

see the shadow ? next the grim reaper will appear . just kidding . i started to say i have heard them called many things but then i realized you were talking about your sythe handle and not an appendage .

Do you mean they won't adjust or you don't know where they should be? The handles have a nut in the end and you unscrew the handle to loosen.

Good luck with that Ultradog because everytime time I used that thing I could never get it to fit right at least that's what I told dad. Shhh hope dad's not listening up there!! LOL

Handle close to the blade should point straight up, 90 degrees to blade.Upper handle should be 45 degrees from lower handle.Cutting is done with a sweeping motion, not chopping.I used to sell a book on using a scythe.Cant remember the authors name.I can use a scythe but cant tell you how. you will have to watch a mower use one. They use a straight snath in Europe.Google the Marugg co.

The handles just need a little oil on the threads. I was playing with the name.
In addition to things mentioned below I cleaned up around the barn, sheds and sugar bush a couple of times each summer. Dad knew he had to keep me buisy. Grandpa taught me how to sharpen one and I can still do it today though not as fast or as fine as he could. The blade on ours was about half as thick as this one from all the years of sharpening.

I never could get one of those things to fit my hands either. It probably was caused by a grass cutting device my Grandfather owned he called a "Lazyboy". Was basically a serrated blade on a hoop frame attached to a hickory handle. I still get aches all over when I think about that device ......

I have a metal handled scythe. Was mowing (hacking is a better description) an electric fence line. Dripping with sweat and just about beat when I got it hung in the fence. LOOK Out

Talk about a quick battery recharge......... Note to self...turn off the charger before clearing the fence line.
