Farmall M crank

Hi, I"m in the process of rebuilding a 1948 farmall M I just picked up from a guy. He thought it had a busted rod. as it turns out, it has a badly spun rod bearing and the piston in that hole is separated. Anyway this leaves me looking for a replacement crank (i"m told 0.100" wear is too much to rebuild with weld), as well as some other parts. The number on my crank is 45571-DC. I have been told that the last two digits must match and that DC cranks are hard to find. Now finally my questions:
1) does anyone know what the DC stands for, or what is different about them from other M cranks having different suffixes?
2) does anyone know where I might find one in good shape?

Thanks for any and all input, this is my first tractor rebuild and all information is appreciated.

Farmall M to a certain year break in mid 1950 all used a small journal crankshaft.

SM-450 used the large journal crankshaft.

Both cranks will interchange with either the M thru 450, just use the bearings for the crank you use.

When they repair a crank by welding it back up to return the journal to STD, they grind them down past the hardend surface and rebuild it back up. Does not matter how much is worn off, they rebuild to back to spec in that process.

I would belive thats the more expensive route to repair but a stock STD/STD crankshaft would probably show wear enough to warrant a .010/.010 clean up grind.

I do not know WHO told you .100 was to much to weld up a crank but I think you need to talk to someone else. I have had cranks welded up and the stroke reground to make a stroker crank with the center of the rod throw moved out .3215 to increase the stroke .625. This was done on all four throws of a V-8 crank. Doing this to one throw would be nothing.

I think that you should look for a good
professional crankshaft welder/resurfaceer.
The one you asked doesn"t know much about the
trade !

You might be better off finding a used engine. There's a guy from Zumbro Falls Mn. , Nick Graves (LGT man) on ebay that sells a lot of motors. I bought one last fall for $500 for my super m. Runs good, 70 lbs. oil pressure and no smoke. My old engine had a crack through the center cam bearing plus needed pistons and the head redone. Jim
