OT- Advice needed for moms poor garden

How do we start ... My Mom has been putting slaked lime on her garden the past two years (me tilling it in), and I think it has finally made the ground to alkaline? Her zucs and kucs have came up, but okra, beans, and peas have not came in but possibly 10%. It has been planted for two weeks and a day now. I really don't think it is the seeds because the zucs and kucs seeds came from the same place. Now I do want to add that she put sand (alot) in the garden about three or four years ago. I think that worked in reverse thinking also. Only thing that I have come up with is taking some top soil up or one of the left over bales of our cow hay up. I am up for any suggestions from you true green thumbs. Thanks in advance for any advice from me and Mom.

First thing to do is do a soil test. That way you are not guessing as to what in wrong. Your co. extension office or local fertilizer co. or local garden center should be able to help you with this. Armand

You would be better off throwing a 5 dollar bill in the garden as compost then to trust any such el chepo test kit at a gardner center.

Like Armand said. Do a proper soil test. Then follow the directions they provide.

I would say it's temp related, I've seen the same thing. Here in N. Florida, beans and okra dont thrive until its flaming hot.

You need an el cheepo test kit, read instructions, take the reading where the roots will be. 2-3 inches down.Should come with the attached for your Country..

What was the soil temp when you planted? Cucs can be planted about 10 degrees less than peas and okra.

I would get a soil sample and have them check the ph of your soil. Soil may not be warm enough for beans. If it was wet in your area the seed may have rotted. Peas can usually be started early if the ground can be worked. Same for radishes, cabbage, lettuce, potatoes and onions. Hal
