Today one of the banjo fittings to the injector started leaking at the pump. I removed the bolt, and there is two steel washers. The washers looked good I resurfaced them, and reinstalled, and no more leak. Now another one is leaking. The bolts are very tight. Is there a reason for a leak at the pump banjo fitting. Stan

It can happen due to a scratch on the pump face, or line-connector. It can also happen from a small bit of dust stuck in there. I've installed many pumps with new washers, had a small leak, loosened all the lines, let them leak and then retighten - and then all was fine.

I just had to do it with my Case 580CK. Pump crapped out last week. I pulled it off, fixed the pump, and put back on with all new steel washers. One line kept leaking at the pump. I had to loosen it twice (with engine running) and then retighten. It finally cleaned itself out and now is fine.

Had to do the same with my Deere 300B backhoe last summer. It's very easy when fixing and installing pumps - especially outdoors, to get a spec of dirt behind a washer.

By the way, new steel washers are NOT pefectly flat. They have radial sealing-ridges. That why you sometimes need a new washer to fix a leak and NOT a perfectly flat washer. New copper washers ARE flat.

for some reason john deere stopped using the copper washers they used to put on those banjo fittings, they were on one of my tractors and they were soft enough to seal well and never had any leaks out of them, you might want to see if you can find some copper washers the same size and see how that works for ya

They leak so you will have something to do. In forty years of working with diesels. I have seen that problem many times. With the pressure that is in the line a scratch or dirt under the seal can do it. Sometimes vibration can cause a leak. I have also had to loosen the bolt and reseat the seal rings. The copper ones would solve a lot of problems. Not sure why they stopped making them.
