Delco alternator question

Don't really want to do this but I saw a delco alternator with the area of the 2 extra wires (3 wire alt) with no connectors and only hooked up as a 1 wire.

Is it possible to convert them from 3 wire to 1 wire? or to run a 3 wire as a 1 wire?

I've never done one myself, as I think the 3 wire is the only way to go, but I've seen kits out there to do it. Probably the last place I saw one was in a JC Whitney catalog.

If you go to a one wire, buy the regulator at a rebuild shop.Make sure and get the a.c. activated regulator. It will eliminate having to rev the engine to kick the alternator in. It"s hard to beleive how much diffrence they make. jstpa

All a 1 wire is, is a rewire worked 3 wire and they just put a cover where the plug should be and they can of course fall out and then they will look like a 3 wire

It only needs a two wire hookup when on a farm tractor. If you want to convert to a one-wire hookup, you stick in a $12 self-excite regulator.
