I am working on a super A, it hasnt been run in 12 yrs, lots of rust in tank, whats the bestmethod (without buying new tank) of cleaning tank and preventing rusty gas from getting into carb etc...

ive been told put muriatic acid and some water in the tank and shake it to kill the rust. I did it in a motorcycle tank and it worked good.

THIS IS WHAT A OLD TIMER BY ME DOES. TAKE THE TANK OFF PUT LOOSEN NUTS AND BOLTS OF VARIOUS SIZE IN THE TANK. STRAP THE TANK TO YOUR RIDING MOWER REAR TIRE AND CUT THE GRASS. DUMP THE STUFF OUT AND RINSE WITH FRESH GAS. THOUGHT THE OLD MAN WAS NUTS BUT IT WORKS GREAT.

super trucker is right I did the same thing with gravel on a tractor that rested 40 years havent had a speck of rust show up yet from 4 years ago!

You might try hanging a thin glove with a magnet in each finger down in the tank. Switch gloves often or clean the glove often.

50/50 muriatic acid mixed with water. fill the tank, DO NOT LEAVE OVERNIGHT, watch the tank, 3 -4 hours at the most. You can buy the acid at Home Depot, Lowes etc... look in the pool section. If you have a plastic tank/can to store it can be reused many times. I restore old bikes, have used this method lots of times.

Hello ctallen2010,
Course sand and river pebbles or marbels.
Shake until done! How you shake it is your choice.

Use nuts/bolts before gravel- a magnet can get them all out. I mount them on a cement mixer and let it run overnight. Insert a short plastic tube in the top of the sediment bowl fixture so not all gas in the tank can drain out- crap in the bottom stays there.

I tend to use vinegar. Works well, cheap, easily disposed of, reuseable for other rust projects.

i have done a few and put the liners in them. the de-rusting, cleaning and liner is a good week of fooling with them. there is a radiator shop near me that does them for about 100 dollars. last 2 tanks i took over there, done in about a week, no problems. just another option for you.

use a 50/50 mix of muratic acid & water, toss in some nuts & bolts and shake it up. Repeat until clean, then clean out the acid and stabilize the metal with a water rinse followed by a bit of acetone (dry gas) in there to absorb the remaining water. Slosh that around and dump out and let tank dry out in the sun while you go down to the motorbike shop and get a bottle of CREEM tank sealer. Put that in, spread it around to line & seal the tank and prevent any future rust and you should be good for the next 60 years.
I've resurrected probably 2 dozen tanks this way and have never had one fail.

Yes!! This is the only tried and true method. DO NOT put rocks, sand, gravel, or hardware items in your fuel tank. Most tractor fuel tanks do have a baffle to reduce the sloshing when the tank is less than full, and if those foriegn objects get behind that baffle, you will have a very difficult time of getting them back out. IF the foriegn objects DO NOT get behind the baffle, then you have a very large area of the tank that is still full of rust.

Leave the hardware in the hardware store, and leave the gravel and rocks in your driveway.

Look on the internet for a product called "kwik poly" its a 2 part epoxy like product. Thin as water but thickens when dry. just take your tank off and pour in solution and shake tank around. it will adhere to the rust and form a shell on the inside. I tried the nuts and bolts and it was a pain plus i had pinholes showing up. tried this product and have not had a problem no for 4 years on a massey 410. Work good so i tried it on my riding mowers and lawn tractor. a lot cheaper also than the tank liners like red coat.
