The wifey and I are are headed up to Philadelphia for 5 days vacation. Of course we wanna see the historic stuff, Liberty Bell, Constitution Center, etc... Any ag, tractor, or dutch country treasures I should try to see?

Not sure where you're from but Lancaster is not really that far from Phila. Lots of things to do and see in that area. Have fun

When are you headed that way? Something to catch in August is the Rough & Tumble steam traction show in Kinzers (between Lancaster and Philadelphia). Also, RR Museum of PA/Strasburg RR complex in Strasburg is worth a visit. Take a ride on the train through Amish farmland.

Are you driving? If so, the drive should be a vacation in itself. Relax and enjoy it. I hung out about a half day at Gettysburg and just ambled around the countryside.

We are flying in from Missouri. Like the railroad and Lancaster ideas. Would like to see Gettysburg too, so little time!

I took about 4 hours out of my day on a business trip to visit the historic district in Philly. The Liberty Bell was okay, I didn't take the time for the tour of Constitution Hall, but did take a little stroll to see where Ben Franklin was buried. Kind of sad to see how much the grave markers have deteriorated over the centuries. Also stopped at the old Friends Meeting Hall since it was a couple blocks away. Didn't feel very comfortable there since I'm not of that faith, though. They're pacifists and I work for a defense contractor. Philly's not a bad town during the day, though, as long as you don't end up in the wrong part of town.

I'm up here for a few more weeks rowing and taking summer classes. You should check out boat house row while you're up here and the museums

Hello Paul Wald,
Philadelpia is the Hollywood of the East Coast.
If you are a movie buff, plenty to see. They even have guided tours ot the different locals,
Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!
Guido.

Was there before the Bell was enclosed . I liked looking at it . Tour guide said we could tap it with our hand , that was neat . Other than the bell , I was looking around for a good tractor salvage yard , nothing in the neighbor hood .

Wife, kids & I are going up that way in June. The Philadelphia Zoo I think is the oldest in the nation. Franklin Institute looks like a interesting Museum. We are also going to hit the countryside & see Strausburg, Lancaster & Gettysburg. New Holland PA is just north of Lancaster PA, not sure if there is anything to see there anymore. If you are into dicast toys check these guys out.http://www.outbacktoystore.com/
Valley Forge is just north of Philadelphia. Have fun & let me know how it goes.

Not really ag related, but Longwood Gardens is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Started life as vacation "cottage" for some of the DuPont family.

Will also recommend Gettysburg. We live nearby and go over frequently and always find something new and interesting if you want to take a day trip.

If your renting a car or have your own, New Holland is about an hour from there. Not too hard to find on a map the company and the town have the same name. Beautiful country out that way too.

Behind the Holiday Inn and across the street from the Philidelphia Mint is a grave yard with old Ben Franklin. You can see the grave from the sidewalk where they opened the fence for viewing.

I don't know for sure if they are still there, but about 10 years ago, there was a WW2 submarine and a very early battle ship that you could look at. I think the submarine was on static display, as it didn't seem to move around at all, but the old steam ship was definitely floating.

There was an entrance fee for each ship, but I found the submarine especially fascinating. My son and I crawled all through it and got to see how those old diesel subs operated.

We went to a museum that I think was on the East side of Philadelphia, and I recognized the steps that Rocky trained on in that movie.

I enjoyed looking at the many historical sights in Philly, and went to Washington D.C. later in the same trip. But for me, the highlight of the trip was getting the chance to really explore the inside of that old submarine. Lots to see--have fun!
