Substituting starter motors

I"m in the process of buying a 900 series Belarus. Previous owner removed 12V Belarus starter and fitted a 24V CAV from a Perkins diesel.
He obviously went wrong somewhere as within twelve months it destroyed the ring gear and starter gear.
I"ve yet to get my hands on it, but the plan is to install another flywheel (got that) and sort out the meshing.
I"ve never had a meshing problem before. What things do I need to consider? I've obviously got to get a new gear for the CAV. As far as I can research, the Belarus starter had 10 teeth and so did the CAV (yet to be confirmed). Is it likely that the tooth spacing would have been different, or is it more likely that he simply got the mounting position wrong and the teeth weren"t engaging correctly?

I can"t really help you with the CAV question. On my Belarus, I changed the starter to a 12 volt Delco model 28mt gear reduction type. Bought it from Kelly Industries 800-256-2142. Works good. The place is located in Texas.

Thanks mmidlam. I'd heard there's a Delco substitute but not much else. Do you have the full number? I'm in Australia but, depending on the $'s, if I can get one here, it might be easier than mucking about with the CAV.

Was the pinion gear a different pitch than the ring gear?

That's it, I'm not sure. Do you think it's likely to have been different? I've only had one look at the problem because I haven't taken delivery yet.
One thing that gave me food for thought is that the pinion gear is totally stripped but the remains are cone shaped. It's stripped more where it would first engage. The ring gear only has the first half of the tooth depth gone. My first thought was that the starter was too far back and only just engaging. However the pinion gear is/was at least as wide as the ring gear and has obviously been engaging full depth.
It's as though it's only just been engaging but each time it's taken a bit off and gone further in until there were no teeth left.
Wouldn't the pitch would have to be really badly off for it not to fully engage?

oh, in the US, we just dial a 1 in front of the 800 toll free number.
I don't have the delco specs. There is also an eastern European gear eduction starter--- Iskra 24.3708
The link for its drive specs might help you:
