It is to me anyway. I don't remember this early of a warning growing up on the farm in the 50s and 60s. Dad would mention some days about the humidity might cause later evening storms. But usually a person stayed aware and kept an ear to the radio..which I still do.

‘Ominous’ tornado threat for Wichita area Monday

A textbook scenario for a violent weather outbreak is taking shape for Monday afternoon and evening in the eastern half of Kansas – including the Wichita metropolitan area.

“It looks like all the ingredients are going to be there,” said Dick Elder, meteorologist in charge at the Wichita branch of the National Weather Service. “This is the most ominous weather pattern for our warning area so far this year.”

That warning area covers the 26 counties in the southeast corner of Kansas. The Wichita office has already posted this graphic on its website home page:

We don't get many tornados in NY, but the NationalWeather Service and the Emergency Broadcast System are constantly conducting tests with advice on what to do in a weather event. They keep us posted within minutes about where summer thunder storms are, and also warn of localized snow storms in the winter. I think that sometimes the info is a bit hyped, but the old saying goes "better safe than sorry" I think this is a good thing. As in your case you have some time to (batten down the hatches) as a precaution.

Way back when we didn't have computer modeling and such detailed reporting as we do now. Thankfully we have come a long way and hopefully lives are saved as a result.

I, too, was a little surprised that the severe weather was forecast so early. Local newspaper said it isn't if it hits, but when and especially where.

A thankless job. Working in Ct one year and they had an early freak snowstorm..so accidents happened, serious ones. The weather forecasting community took a beating and so, early spring another system look potentially serious and the state shutdown the eastside interstates....never snowed a bit and there were some really mad truckers that had to sit all day in a sunny dry rest stop.

If it does develop as is being forecast, it looks really similar to the the one that hit Oklahoma City with an F5...Wichita had several death out of that one.

While the site I've given a link to is just for Kansas it sure has some interesting records. I can't see any county within the state that has not had recorded tornadoes.

Knowing from some I have seen the records are for recorded ones only. I suppose many of those in open country are never recorded.
Interesting tornado stats page for KS
