OT - Google/Malware

When I do a google search and click on the desired link it is intercepted somehow and takes me to an advertising site of some sort (different site every time). Have run malware, spybot, and anti-virus to no avail over the last day or so. I do a lot of searches and this is getting old fast. Anybody seen this and have a solution?

Thanks,

Kirk

Had this issue yesterday. 2 PCs picked up viruses from Drudge Report. I run XP. Had to start in safe mode and ran AVG Free. It caught the downloader and backdoor trojan when Norton did not. After loading AVG Free it intercepted 2 more hijack attempts.

Tough to diagnose based on that alone, but here are my thoughts...

Best case- something has modified your browser and it needs to be removed

Worst case- you have a rootkit, which will foil any attempts at running antivirus and will require a re-install of your entire operating system.

If you haven"t done it already, I"d try installing Microsoft Security Essentials. It"s free if you have a legal copy of Windows. If that doesn"t help, installing a quality anti-virus from a CD (Norton, Symantec, etc) if you haven"t already tried it. After that, you may have some serious repair work needed on the drive.

I'm thinking Stockdale Dave knows what he's talking about, because I didn't understand a single thing he said. There's value in knowing when you're licked on these computer issues- I'd go with his recommendations on this.

Ì had a trojan like that. My scans wouldn't find it either. Go to malwareby.com download their program. It got rid of mine. Let us know if it works.

The two best free anti- malware softwares are MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti Malware) and Superantispyware ( not just my opinion ) Those in combination with AVG usually does the trick. They can all be downloaded from Filehippo. I did try one once called "Spyware terminator" which nearly "terminated" my computer!

I had a Google add pop up recently , no item where I could get it off the screen. had to use the right button. If it happens again I will tell them I am not happy.AVG didn't react.

Thanks for the advice. I have had AVG running on this machine for years. I also scanned with malware as well as Spyware Search and Destroy. I have not booted in safe mode yet, but will try that next and do another scan. Problem is I have a project due Monday and need the computer functional. Might not realistically be able to do it before then. So far I am only noticing the rogue Google behavior which I can work around. Hopefully not being more malicious than that.

Thanks,

Kirk

I had the same problem...downloaded Hitman Pro 3.5 and it fixed the problem in less that 5 minutes! This was after my IT guy messed around with other fix-it programs for over an hour. Hitman was fast! It scans my computer whenever I re-start it and has worked great.

Good Recommendation.

Hitman Pro 3.5 fixed my issue, at least for the first 2 checks. You were right it took all of 5-6 minutes. The virus scans take an hour or more.

Thanks,

Kirk

Had the same problem as the original poster, I was running AVG as my only protection. Took it to an IT guy who "wiped it clean" and installed Avaist! for protection. Is Hitman compatible with protection programs?

Thank you Eldon(wa)!!! Hitman took care of that atapi Thang. I was tired of the search engine not working.
Hoosier, I don`t think you`ll have probs with yer Avast, but I`ll admit I`m running Avira now days.
