Hey,
I don't want to ask this on the spanish thread cause it prolly won't be around long.
Sounds like you are or know some Germans that migrated to the States.

Can you tell me why a German that has been living in the States for say 20 years with a house, job/business and paying taxes could not return to the States after leaving (visiting Germany for example)? I've had a couple people over the years tell me that this is the case. Sounded a little fishy but these are productive members of their community.

That's why I'm asking? Got a sneakin suspicion that it has something to do with getting money from the german government of some kind (retirement/SS?) Only thing you get out of them is "can't do it"

Probably never got their papers in order. Prior to 911, a lot of foriegn nationals overstayed visa"s, and went in and out of the country at will. Even people who had been expelled legally, the government never got around to actually processing the paperwork. Since 911, a lot of folks went to Canada from Detroit and found themselves SOL in Windsor. At least in Michigan, it isn"t easy to cross the border anymore. The immigration system has it"s own system of administrative law judges, seperate from the rest of the legal system. Once you are out, it would be very difficult to come back legally.
 
I thought, in the states, that a 1031 was a sale of property under the 1031 rule the avoids taxes by purchasing property of similar value?

1031D is someone's handle that I was directing my question to. But your answer could be real close.
