Sems like a no brainer

Fat heifers are worth $1200 for beef. Bred, close up cows and cows with calves by their side are selling for $1000. Seems kinda foolish to hold back heifers to breed for replacement, hoping they catch and have a live calf next year when I can sell the heifers now and have a calf this year with a $200 profit.
Am I missing something?

I guess if you think milk is going back to $19.00
raise replacements. If things keep going like
they are now, your thinking is right.
The thing I wonder about is this s.x-selective
semen. A friend of mine had 99 heifers out of 100. This might make $1200 heifers a permanent
thing.
The reason for s.x is I could not post it first
time. I guess s.x is as bad as when I used
Sp.n.sh the other day.

Oops, I think you are talking about beef. But,
dairy affects beef most of the time.

Yes,but I think I can trust somebody elses breeding for just one year under these circumstances.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs when old broken down dairy cows can control the price of good, non-diseased, BEEF breeds.

I am with you on this one. You gotta make money where you can when you can. Everyone always thinks "well next year it will be better." That next year never comes, at least not for me...

Personally... I think I'd be holding the heifers and dumping cows right about now. Got a feeling that prices are headed higher so I doubt you're going to see cheaper replacements next year if that's what you're aiming for. Prices have been stronger here the past 4 months than they've been in the past 7 years and given the cull we've had.... I don't think there's a lot there to fill the hole if demand picks up much.

We talked to the kids on Easter. They didn't care for the idea. The oldest boy wants this place, intact. I'm not real happy about it,but I'll have to make money where I can I guess.

Yep, you can trust somebody else's breeding. In fact you can be sure you are getting the following at a bred cow sale.
a fence crawler
a cow prone to prolapsed uterus
a cow with a mean disposition
a cow that won't mother up
or maybe even all of the above rolled into one. If you had to sell ten cows would you sell your best ten?
