Keep our finger crossed. Setting here watching out the window as son lays it down. Using a JD1209 and applying a perservative. Can bale at 22% moisture. Now if the rain stays away,

Good luck/best wishes on your first cutting.

Nancy and I were talking about your Alfalfa the other day.

Post a couple of photos for us if you get a chance.

Hey gitrib,

Heat bothers alfalfa? All types or just some types?

Just curious as they just cut there 5th cutting here in AZ and it was 101ºf Tuesday when they were cutting. I would bet it was in the 90º's while they cut.

I noticed them raking yesterday.

Send the rain our way! We fertilized the hay field Wed. Apr. 28 because we had three days of rain forecast at 50% chance or better. We didn't get a drop.

Weatherman said this morning even with all the rain we got in Jan, Feb & March, we are now below normal.

Not good for this time of year.

T_Bone: Son handle our Alfalfa a little different. some twenty years ago I had a small irrigation well drilled and purchased a hard hose irrgation unit. Last year he pumped all year. This year he has not pumped at all of course last year was it's first year. Heat does not bother Alfalfa as long as it has moisture. When he is done baling he will apply a herbicide to kill any of the grassy weeds. Then the irrigation will start. He will apply fertilizer through the irrigation what ever soil test called for including all of the micro nutrients. That is Boron, Sulphur, Magnesem, all of the little goodies. Then it will be cut again in twenty-one day. Tissue test will me made on that cutting to see what else might be needed.

Conklin Pro-Serve III. Easy to apply and is non-corosive. He uses a small tank mounted on the swather with a 12 volt pump. Has spray nozzels mounted just in front of crimper. There is a chart that determines rate, based on size of swather, rate of travel, estimated yield. Very simple and effective.
