OT, water tank advice needed...

We have an Ideal galvanized metal water tank, & have had for about 10 years. The past 2 or 3 years I`ve had to fix pin-holes. I`m not sure what the life-span of these are suppose to be, but I believe this 1 has done us a good job. Now what I am kind of wondering about is these black rubber type cattle tanks? I`m in So./central Il., so we do have some cold times during winter. I use an in-water(on the bottom) electric heating element type water heater. Any input metal vs. rubber is greatly appreciated!
TY in advance also!!! Gilbert

We've got several, and when it gets cold, we put all the critters together and just heat one of them. So the others freeze solid, and we have never had a problem with them. Don't know if actual temp makes a difference, once they freeze- it only gets to about zero here.

They will melt, of course, if the heating element doesn't have water around it. BTDT- or more precisely, WIFE has BTDT.

I've been all black plastic made by that rubber m company since the early 90's. Every tank I've gotten is still in service. Rarely do I turn one over anytime, some of them have frozen and thawed for a decade. I used to use a temporary watering system where I had small fields and since Im lazy I put a tank in every other field, probably 25 in all. I've also used them to feed wet distillers slop which runs 180 degrees or more at times. Exactly 3 tanks have had splits start, all were at the top and all related to impact (tractor, truck, skid loader) when full of water and temps in the mid 30's. I'd not consider getting a metal water tank again.
