New Holland Square Balers

Hey Guys,

I'm looking into buying a square bales to do about 500-1000 bales of straw each year, so not a whole lot of use. BUT, I would like to be able to move faster than a crawl, because we drill beans into the wheat stubble, so time is important. Just trying to find another little niche here.

In my area the older New Hollands seem to be the most prevalent, I'm assuming because they were the best option until the 336-era JD balers were sold. (I've done a lot of throwing behind a 336, I know they're pretty good) I don't quite need the capacity of a newer JD or NH, but I would like to find a machine that is dependable and will still move along well. What models would you recommend. (there seem to be about 15 NH models of the 2xx variery)

(There is a NH 268 on craigslist for $1000, stated in good-excellent condition)

Thanks

I've had a super 67 and now i got a 65. With either of them you could really cram a lot of straw through them. Now alfalfa is another story.

Can not say much for speed since I am old school and you run things like a baler slow unless you want big repair bills. That said to me NH is the Caddy of balers and if I ever have a choice they are the only ones I will ever own again. Had JDs over the years and liked them till I got this NH271 I have and I'll never look back at a JD again

I would think any New holland in good shape is good. Anything you find in nice shape for a good price would be a good buy. 1000 for a 268 seems a bit high but i guess it depends on the local market. I would think $700 would be a bit closer to the value.

1 Dollar,

I've never baled straw so I don't know how it relates to baling hay. However, I bale about 2000 - 2500 bales of grass hay each year with my NH273 baler. I pull it with my Ford 2000, generally in second gear which is supposed to be about 3.5 miles per hour. Since I farm all by myself, I cut small patches of grass of about 4 to 5 acres at a time. It takes me about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to bale each patch.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Just wondering, is that #65 -a compact #65 or did NH make a standard #65? Compact makes smaller size bales.

Also, I would choose a NH baler over most any other. I did have until last year, a AC #303 -(just an orange NH) that was a great baler. Someone offered me way too much for it, so it was sold. I also have two NH #269's and a #65 Compact.

320 nh with hydraulic tensioning makes great bales with capacity to do over 250 per hour. Most of the older balers here have gone to scrap. Very few 260 270 or 280 left haven't seen any older balers in years

Yes the 65 is a compact. I sell about 4000 bales of wheat straw a year and when you sell it looks are every thing. That little 65 will make such a square tight bale that the strings make a twangy sound when you strum them.

If you can find a good ole N H 277 it might fit the bill. I don't how many models have the tines on top to pull in the larger wind rows but my 277 does.

I had a 275, and it seems like it would do 100 to 150 bales an hour. Price seems a little rich, but then, I don't know how many decent 200 series are left out there.

I run a 268 NH and it sure eats a lot more hay than the IH 46 or the IH 435 that I have. I usually run in second gear on my 860 for instead of first for the IH balers.

The 268 is a crawl machine, if you want any kind of speed, go up to a later model NH, or a Deere 336 or 346 I run a 336 and it is a much higher capacity baler than the 268 which I had before, I also bale 500-1500 squares a year.

I have a NH 268 in real good shape. I guess they know what they are saying when they say it is a crawl bayler but I bale 2,000 bales of straw most ever year haven,t thought it was real slow. Have also a 282 but can,t get anymore for the lareger bales so always use the 268 , have tried
a nh 273 couldn,t say there was much diffrence..
Advantage to the nh is there is always used parts around.. Cheap to keep them going
