Are we getting ripped off?

Friend if mine had steering cable break on his 2670 Case. Dealer said they would be around $350 each. He thought this was too much and I agreed. I went searching on the internet, finnally found a company that could make some replacements, at the tune of about $100. So a $250 markup on a cable, thats good profit, wonder if all things are like that?

I guess only part of that mark-up is profit. The rest is a penalty for the laziness of convenience. Most things cost less if you do some research.

Needed battery for my portable phone (two units). About 15 dollars each most places. About 12 dollars at Radio Shack. I bought two for 99 cents and 3.60 some thing for shipping from China, Total a little under 5 dollars for two, and they arrived in 9 days.
This is the third time I have bought from Hong Kong. Each time was fast and easy.

About five years ago, I needed a set of front wheel seals for my Oliver Super 55 from an Agco dealer. I called it in over the phone and just told the parts man to "order it". They were $43. Each.
I sucked it up and wrote the check to them because I did tell them to order them and it was all my fault for not asking for the price ahead of time. I priced a National set for about $5 each afterwards.
I'm sure there will be a lot of stories here.

Plus you are paying for the name, the guy that knows what part you need (which is getting tougher to find) and if they have them on a shelf they have to pay for having them ready. But that price difference is shocking. I have seen price difference of $10-50 a number of times, but not that much.

I tried the batteries from Hong Kong for my cell phone a few years ago. didn't work, so they sent a replacement real quick, but they didn't work either.

Nice comments, but the parts are not coming from china, made here in the USA. A very well known maker of cables, I have a feeling it is the same ones that supply the oem parts.

I talked over 3 hours on mine this morning with out them running down. My point was that the high priced ones are most likely the same ones made in China.
Just don't get me started on the local department store that has "60 percent off" on just about every weekend.

Dave 2, would it be OK if I bought that same made in China, 99 cent battery, from an American company for 15 dollars and had it delivered by a union truck driver?
My point isn't that I like to buy China, I do not. It is that American companies have got to straighten out their act or they are DEAD!-DEAD!

Hey coloken, I bot batteries several times from Hong Kong thru ebay and been very pleased. I just bot 100 white 3.4v LED bulbs with 25 12v and 100 5v resistors for less than $8 at my front door. My power wagon will hardly get to Walmart for that! I am not sure what to use them for yet, but was thinking auto interior, flash lites, etc. Ya either keep up or get left behind........ Dan

When the chinese work for pennies per hour, it's pretty hard to manufacture things here. It all comes down to the cost of labor.

Think it is!

25-30 Years ago, we used to drill and test for Wal-Marts all over the Midwest. Can't stand the "people" now and the business in the stores.

Hope Sam Walton's "family" is proud now!

Sure miss a lot of the stores they took out.

A good friend of mine just had the same problem last year on his 2470. He went with the cheaper cables too. I told him he needed to check out how they where made first but NOOOO I was wrong. I liked it this winter when he had his front blade on, pushing snow, and he could only drive in a circle. Seems that those bargain ones did not have the same seals on the cables as OEM. He had the nerve to call and asked me to do a service call to put the right ones on. I told him I would....... just as soon as it was not twenty below. What he paid in labor in the cold would have bought the correct ones.

These are the exact same cables, seals and all. there are other cables, but not the same. The brochure for these cables show ag and construction equipment on it, all measurements are identical, construction is identical. Sure you can get some e-brake cables and use them if you want
