k321 engine misses when throttle is advanced

I have a john deere 314 with a k321 spec#60343 it was running fine then began to run like it was running out of gas. When I started it it would flood out the carburetor, so I rebuilt the carb and tried again. It runs at a low idle, but when advancing the idle it begins to run rough and will backfire through exhaust after a few minutes and once again gas id coming from the carb. I believe that it may be an ignition problem, but not sure. The points look goo, and when I tested the coil with plug on top of head the spark appears to be kind of weak and reddish orange in color. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

If your tractor has points I would replace them.
Does it run ok when its cold? If it does could be the coil. Hal

A stumble on opening the throttle usually indicates points too close together. Points have to be set at .020 full open on that engine.

The problem could be with the points, condensor, and/or coil.

Open up a spark plug to a .25 gap and if the spark can't cross that gap, you won't have a spark under compression with the regular gap.

I had an 1987 GMC that acted like that and it turned out to be a cracked distributor cap, moisture gets in the crack and shorts out the spark. I was told the short term fix is to spray the inside of the cap with WD40 (water displacer) and then wipe out the excess and put it back together. Good luck!

I will almost bet my bottom dollar the points are burnt! I pull with kohler engines and have seen this alot.

If ignition repairs don't solve your problem, start thinking about exhaust valve sticking in guide as this was a major problem on the single cyl kohler engines. Normally all that is needed is to run a reamer through guide to clean it out. They will pop and bang like ignition failure. And you also need to adjust timing by opening and closing points using a timing light to the spark setting mark on flywheel unless they have changed things lately.

"Points have to be set at .020 full open on that engine."

ACTUALLY, you need to read the shop manual.

The point gap is set by using a TIMING LIGHT 'cause the point gap determines timing.

I have posted a link to the factory shop manual for your convenience.

The page you want is 8.3 (.pdf page 73)
HOW to set those points CORRECTLY

I just worked on a K-321 with almost the same problem. It turned out to be an incorrect float level. With the carb inverted the top of the float, which is now the bottom should be, parallel with the body of the carb.

I just wanted to thank everyone for there help. I ordered a new set of points and a condenser, but they would not be in until Friday or Saturday. I did however install a new plug and a new carb float. I also cleaned the old points up a little to see if it made a difference. The points looked like they had some oxidation on them. I fired it up and it now runs up to high throttle, but starts to miss after a little bit. It will then back fire through exhaust. I will wait to get the new points and condenser in and see if this makes the difference. Thanks again and I will let you know how it turns out.

I installed new points and a condenser today, and it runs like new. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. This is great forum with great people. Thanks, Dave
