OT Grain Vac Question

I have a 18' bin that I want to put a drying floor in this year. The place I sell the corn to has a grain vac that they use now to empty the bin. My question is; do I need a unloading auger or can I just put a tube and sump in the center of the bin and can they suck the grain out that way? It would save quite a bit of $$ not buying a unload auger, and a 6" is awful slow for loading out a semi, but doesn't seem right to put a 8" auger under the floor for just around 4000 bu. Will this work? I know when the corn quits coming out of the center they will have to vac the rest out from the inside. Your thoughts, Chris

There must be a door on the side of the bin with a small door to let corn run out. As long as it is a 18 foot bin you won't hurt anything by opening that door and letting it run out. When it quits running out they can clean it with the vac just about as easy as if you had a cleanout auger in the middle.
If you have a cleanout auger in the middle they could use a sweep to clean most of the floor but it sounds like you hire them to clean it now and with a vac handy there is no use going to the expense of buying a tube and pot in the center.
A lot of gov bins were 18 foot and they had a cleanout door inside the regular door. They help 3250 bushels and usually there would be approx 800 bushels left when the grain quit running out of the hole.

Hi Chris, in my opinion it will not work at all. We owned a Dunbar-Kapple vac for 20 years. Along with our grain bin system we filled and emptied 3 Harvester silos on another farm. One silo we stuck a auger in other two still used unloaders. And other experience sucking out graineries and draw-ed as much as 90 feet on barn floor.
But they MUST have air to draw in at the inlet along with the grain. You must be able to control the flow of grain at the inlet and allow a full flow of air.
Wasn't much fun to plug it(cut the air off) and have to take apart the pipes and clean them out.
Any other questions just ask. Mark

Our local coop does it all the time.

I have one small bin with just the tube and slide gate, without an auger.Stick the suction tube on the end of your tube, open the slide and the grain will come out.

Mark is right, you need it so it can get air,,Ive done this, have one bin with tube and rusted out sump, works great,,another bin with tube and good sump,it works but is lots slower,,cant get enough air
